VILLANOVA, Pa. - On Monday night, Villanova learned that it has been chosen to play in the 2012 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). The Wildcats will host American University on Thursday, March 15 at 7:00 PM. A total of 64 teams make-up the WNIT field, including 31 automatic bids and 33 at large selections.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to play in the postseason," said Wildcat head coach Harry Perretta. "This team has shown great improvement from last season and I am happy that they will get a chance to play in a national postseason tournament. This is a nice accomplishment for our basketball team."
With a win over American, Villanova will advance to the second round and play the winner of the Central Michigan/Illinois State game.
American enters play in the WNIT with a 23-7 overall record. The Eagles captured the Patriot League regular season championship with a 14-0 record.
Villanova'a appearance in the WNIT will be the team's 10th postseason berth in the last 13 seasons. It will also mark the Wildcats sixth overall trip to the WNIT and first since 2008. Villanova is 4-5 all-time in the WNIT.
The Wildcats enter postseason play with a 17-14 overall record. The team's last outing came on Saturday, March 3, when the Wildcats lost to Louisville by a score of 63-47 in the second round of the Big East Tournament. Villanova tallied a 61-60 victory over Seton Hall in the first round. Villanova is led by junior forward Laura Sweeney who leads the team in scoring (14.6 ppg.), rebounding (7.8 rpg.), field goal percentage (.502), steals (52) and blocks (37). For her efforts this season, Sweeney was named second team All-Big East.
