PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Villanova University senior forward Laura Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) has been named second team All-Big East for the second consecutive season. The announcement was made on Thursday, March 7, in Hartford, Conn. The 2012 Big East Championship gets underway on Friday, March 8, at the XL Center in downtown Hartford.
Sweeney leads Villanova in five statistical categories, including scoring (13.8 ppg.), rebounding (6.9 rpg.), field goal percentage (.520), steals (68) and blocks (57). She started all 29 games this season and tallied four 20-point games, 24 double scoring efforts and eight double-doubles. For her Wildcat career, Sweeney has posted double figure scoring games in 85 of 122 contests.
Her best scoring effort of the season came at Syracuse on March 2 when she tallied a career-high 29 points in a 77-75 triple overtime win. She currently ranks sixth all-time in program history in scoring with 1,517 points and fifth in rebounding with 793.
The six seed Villanova Wildcats open up play in the Big East Tournament on Saturday, March 9, against the winner of the Georgetown/Providence game. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. With a win, the Wildcats would advance to play third seeded Syracuse in the quarterfinals on Sunday, March 10, at 8:30 p.m.
