LAST TIME OUT

Villanova - On Wednesday, Feb. 23, at The Pavilion, the University of Pittsburgh used a 21-11 run in the last 7:07 of regulation to lift the Panthers to a 64-62 victory over Villanova University.

Villanova started the game strong, jumping out to a 16-7 lead by the 7:42 mark of the first half. With the Wildcats holding a 24-15 advantage, 3:37 before intermission, Pittsburgh went on a 10-4 run to cut the margin to 28-25 at the half.

Villanova shot the ball well in the first stanza, hitting on 12-of-25 attempts from the floor for 48 percent. Junior center Brandi Barnes led the 'Cats with eight points, while freshman Katie Davis came of the bench to net seven. For the Panthers, guard Gina Montesano tallied eight points in the first half.

Villanova opened the second half much like they began the first. Tied at 28-28 at the 18:59 mark, the Wildcats used a 12-3 run over the next 4:31 to extend their lead to 40-31 with 14:28 remaining. Freshman guard Trish Juhline sparked the Villanova surge with 10 points, including two three-pointers.

With the 'Cats up by eight at 51-43 with 7:21 left in the contest, the Panthers quickly rallied. An 8-2 run trimmed the Villanova lead to two points, and when guard Monique Toney scored on a driving layup at the 3:57 point, Pittsburgh took its first lead of the second half at 54-53.

Toney hit yet another big shot minutes later for the Panthers, as a three-pointer broke a 58-58 tie and gave Pittsburgh a three-point lead. With the Panthers holding a 63-60 lead and just over 17 seconds to go in regulation, Davis launched a shot and hit from the top right corner for the Wildcats. Her foot was just over the three-point line, however, and brought Villanova only to within one at 63-62. The 'Cats had one last chance at the buzzer, but a Jenea Skeeter's shot fell short, and Pittsburgh came away with the 64-62 victory.

Barnes led Villanova with 13 points and five boards in the loss, while Juhline and Davis netted 12 and 10 respectively. The Wildcats shot 49.1 percent for the game, on 27-of-55 from the field. Rounding out the Villanova scoring was Nicole Druckenmiller with seven points, Stephanie Baker, Megan Stewart and Skeeters with six and Mary Beth Snell with two.

PROVIDENCE - Providence is coming off a 63-49 loss at Georgetown. Georgetown led 28-19 at halftime, before outscoring the Friars, 35-30, in the second half. The Hoyas were led by Katie Smrcka-Duffy who scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Nathalie Bourdereau who netted 18 points. Providence was paced by Meghan Hinds who recorded 19 points and pulled-down seven rebounds. Jen Gombotz added 11 points for the Friars. In 40 minutes of action, Skeeters tallied a career-high nine assists to go with five rebounds, one block, one steal and no turnovers. Due to the injuries to starting guards Lauren Pellicane and Mimi Riley, Skeeters has been forced to play a lot at the point guard position for the Wildcats.

80-STRAIGHT: Entering play versus Providence, Villanova has made at least one three-point field goal in 80 consecutive games. The last time the Wildcats failed to connect on a three-point field goal was on Dec. 2, 1997 when they were 0-for-7 from behind the arc in a 67-27 loss at Connecticut.

PLAYING TIME: Due to the knee injury to starting guard Lauren Pellicane, senior Jenea Skeeters and freshman Trish Juhline have had to carry the load at guard for the Wildcats. In the last 10 games, Skeeters has played 351 of a possible 360 minutes, while Juhline has logged 385 of a possible 440 minutes. For the year, Skeeters and Juhline have started every game with Skeeters averaging 35.6 mpg., and Juhline averaging 31.8 mpg. Villanova was already short-handed at the guard spot before Pellicane's injury, as junior Mimi Riley has missed all but three games with a foot injury.

YOUNG GUNS: Of the top eight players in head coach Harry Perretta's rotation, three are freshmen and one is a sophomore. Two of the rookies, guard Trish Juhline and forward Katie Davis, are true freshmen, while forward Nicole Druckenmiller is a redshirt freshman. Sophomore center Stephanie Baker comes off the bench. STUDY HALL: The Villanova women's basketball team has enjoyed a great deal of success in the classroom. During the fall semester, 10 of the team's 15 players recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better. As a whole, the 597 Villanova student-athletes combined to earn a 2.9 GPA this past fall semester.

PELLICANE'S STREAK ENDS: Junior guard Lauren Pellicane saw her streak of 43-straight games in the starting line-up come to an end when she missed the UConn game on Saturday, Jan. 22. Pellicane missed the match-up with the No. 1 Huskies due to an injured right knee suffered in practice on Thursday, Jan. 20.

Pellicane has started 15 games this season and is averaging 5.5 ppg., 2.5 rpg., and 3.2 apg in 34.3 minutes per contest. In addition, she has made 18 three-point field goals. RILEY LOST FOR THE SEASON: Junior guard Mimi Riley will miss the remainder of the 1999-2000 season due to left foot injury. Following the season, Riley will apply for a medical hardship. If granted the hardship, she will have two years of eligibility remaining with the 2000-2001 season. Riley suffered the injury in Villanova's final exhibition game on Nov. 16. The injury forced her to miss the team's first six games. She returned to the line-up on Dec. 8 when she came off the bench at Boston College to tally four points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Riley also saw playing time in Villanova's next two games, logging 22 minutes versus St. Joseph's on Dec. 11 and 17 minutes against George Washington on Dec. 13. The injury has failed to heal properly and the discomfort forced Riley to miss both games in the PNC Bank Wildcat Christmas Classic on Dec. 29-30 and the Providence contest on Jan. 8.

A NEW ROLE: After playing point guard for head coach Harry Perretta and the Wildcats the last four seasons, Shanette Lee has exchanged her uniform for a clipboard, as Lee will now serve as Perretta's third assistant. Lee had a stellar four years on the Main Line, finishing her career as the program's all-time assist leader with 526.
