ROUND ONE: Saturday's contest between Villanova and Syracuse is the second time this season that the two teams have met. On Jan. 10 at Manley Field House, Syracuse crushed the Wildcats, 81-59. Syracuse raced out of the gates in the first meeting as they led 11-0 to start the game. With the 'Cuse leading 30-20 with 7:03 remaining in the first half, the Wildcats went on a 14-4 run to tie the game at 34-34 before Syracuse scored the last five points of the half, including a halfcourt shot at the buzzer by Ernestine Austin to lead 39-34 at intermission. Syracuse came out on fire in the second half, as the Orangewomen used a 22-7 run to take a commanding 61-41 lead at the 11:29 mark. From this point, Syracuse would cruise to the victory. In the win, the Orangewomen were led by Paula Moore who had 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Ernestine Austin who tallied 15 points including a perfect 3-for-3 effort from behind the arc. Also in double figures for the Orangewomen were Jaime James with 13 and Jazmine Wright with 12. Villanova was led by Jenn Sliwa who had 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Mary Beth Snell who was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range. Syracuse shot a sizzling 52.6 percent and a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point land, while the 'Cats shot 39.7 percent from the field and made good on 8-of-18 from three-point range. The 81 points scored by Syracuse equals the most points given up by Villanova this year. The Wildcats also yielded 81 points to Providence in an overtime loss.

Head Coach Harry Perretta

Harry Perretta is in his 21st year as the head coach of the Villanova women's basketball program. In his tenure at Villanova, Perretta has compiled a 378-219 record. Against Big East competition, Perretta has registered a 168-127 mark. During his career on the Main Line, Perretta has guided the Wildcats to three NCAA Tournament appearances, two Big East Tournament Championships and eight Philadelphia Big 5 titles. In 1981-82, he led Villanova to the AIAW Final Four. Last season, Perretta and his team earned an invite to the inaugural WNIT. Perretta, who is the all-time winningest coach in Villanova women's basketball history, recorded his 375th this season at Pittsburgh with a 61-45 win. Perretta is a 1978 graduate of Lycoming College.

Head Coach Marianna Freeman
Syracuse is led sixth-year head coach Marianna Freeman. In her tenure at Syracuse, Freeman has guided the Orangewomen to a 54-107 record. Before arriving at Syracuse, Freeman was the top assistant at the University of Iowa under current Rutgers mentor Vivian Stringer. Freeman's first head coaching position came at Delaware State (1981-83) where she tallied a 21-27 mark. Freeman is a 1979 graduate of Cheyney State University where she played for Vivian Stringer. Her eight-year overall coaching record currently stands at 75-134.

LAST TIME OUT:

VILLANOVA: Villanova is coming off a 65-39 loss at Boston College on Wednesday, Feb. 17. Boston College jumped out to a quick start, outscoring Villanova 27-10 in the first 17:45 of the opening half. The Wildcats would rally in the final 1:48 to cut the Eagle lead to 29-17 at intermission. Villanova struggled in the first half from the field, connecting on just 7-of-37 from the floor for 19 percent, while the Eagles were 13-of-25 from the field for 52 percent. Boston College broke the game open at the beginning of the second half, as the Eagles raced to a 41-21 advantage at the 15:55 mark. Boston College was led by freshman forward Becky Gottstein who had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Alissa Murphy netted 13 points. Jamie Cournoyer tallied 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Lauren Pellicane led the 'Cats with eight points, while freshman forward Stephanie Baker tallied six points and seven rebounds. For the game, the 'Cats were just 16-of-69 for 23 percent, while Boston College was 30-of-51 for 59 percent. From three-point range, Villanova made just 5-of-33.

SYRACUSE: On Wednesday, Feb. 17, Syracuse lost at No. 9 Notre Dame by a score of 82-60. The Irish led 46-25 at halftime, but only outscored the Orangewomen, 36-35, in the second half. Notre Dame was paced by Sheila McMillen who scored a game-high 20 points including a 6-for-14 effort from three-point range and Niele Ivey who netted 17 points to go with nine assists. Also scoring double figures for the Irish were Ruth Riley with 16 and Ericka Haney who had 12. Syracuse was paced by Leigh Aziz who came off the bench to score 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and Jaime James who netted 13 points and recorded six rebounds. Paula Moore added 12 points and six rebounds for Syracuse. For the game, Notre Dame shot 47.5 percent from the floor, while Syracuse shot 32.3 percent from the field.

BAD NIGHT: Villanova is coming off one of its worst nights of the year last Wednesday at Boston College. In the loss, the 'Cats scored a season-low 39 points and shot a season-worst 23.2 percent from the field. For the game, the Wildcats missed more shots than the Eagles attempted, as Villanova was just 16-of-69 from the field including a dismal 5-of-33 from behind the arc, compared to Boston College who was 30-of-51. The 33 three-point attempts is a season-high for the Wildcats.

FAREWELL SENIORS: Saturday's game with Syracuse will be the final home game for Villanova seniors Shannon Ferretti, Shanette Lee and Jenn Sliwa. Together, the three have helped lead Villanova to a 66-43 mark over the last four seasons. Entering play against Syracuse, Sliwa ranks in the top 20 all-time at Villanova in three different categories including scoring (18th with 890 points), rebounding (12th with 475) and assists (20th with 161), while Lee rates second all-time on the Wildcat career assist list with 508 and she is 14th in rebounding with 452 rebounds. During their careers on the Main Line, Lee has played in 109 games, while Sliwa has played in 105 games and Ferretti has played in 104 contests.

SKEETERS REACHES 900: In last Wednesday's game at Boston College, Villanova junior forward Jenea Skeeters scored six points giving her 900 for her career. The 900 career points ranks her 18th on Villanova's all-time scoring chart. Skeeters is just 34 points shy of Lynn Tighe who is 17th on the all-time list with 934 points.

DIAL LONG DISTANCE: After 24 games, sophomore guard Lauren Pellicane is 58-of-154 (37.7 %) from three-point land. Her 58 three-pointers ties her for second in the Big East for triples made. For the season, Pellicane has had at least one three-pointer in 21 of Villanova's 24 games and she has made three or more triples on eight occasions. Pellicane is averaging 8.9 ppg., 2.2 rpg, and 2.5 apg. in a team-leading 32.0 minutes per game. Pellicane replaced graduated senior Jenny Higgins at the two-guard this season. Last season, Higgins led the country with 100 three-point field goals.

LIMITING TURNOVERS: As is the case with most Harry Perretta coached teams, Villanova does a good job of limiting turnovers. The Wildcats have been especially good in the last two games where they have committed a combined 15 turnovers in the last two contests (6 vs. WVU/ 9 vs. BC)l. For the season, Villanova has committed 307 turnovers for an average of 12.7 per game. The Wildcats have had 10 or less turnovers eight times this season. In Perretta's 21 years as the Wildcats head coach, Villanova has never averaged more than 15 turnovers a game in one season.

SECOND BEST: Senior point guard Shanette Lee moved into second place on the all-time Villanova assist list with her three assists last Wednesday at Boston College. Lee currently has 508 career assists which places her second to Lynn Tighe (1983-87), who is the all-time leader with 521 assists. Tighe is currently Villanova's Senior Women's Administrator.

INDIANA DUO: Villanova gets a great deal of production from its Indiana forward duo of Jenn Sliwa and Jenea Skeeters. Sliwa, a native of Valparaiso, Ind. is averaging 8.1 ppg., 3.3 rpg., and 2.0 apg., in 25.8 minutes of action, while Skeeters, a native of Mishawaka, Ind., is averaging 10.5 ppg., 4.2 rpg., 2.3 apg, and 1.0 spg in 32.0 minutes of action. Sliwa and Skeeters are also neck and neck on the all-time Villanova scoring chart. A fifth year senior, Sliwa has 890 points in 105 career games, while the junior Skeeters has scored 900 career points in 81 career contests. Skeeters and Sliwa are 18th and 19th respectively on the Villanova all-time scoring list.

DEFENSE: Strong defense has always been a trademark of Harry Perretta coached teams. Dating back to the 1994-95 campaign, Villanova has never given up more than 60 points per game in a season. After 24 games this year, Villanova is yielding just 58.6 ppg. and have held five opponents under 50 points and 13 opponents under 60 points. The Wildcats are currently second in the Big East and 11th in the nation in scoring defense. Last season, the Wildcats held their opponents to just 56.4 ppg, which led the Big East Conference and ranked sixth nationally. In 17 of the team's 19 wins in 1997-98, Villanova held its opponents under 60 points and they held seven teams under 50 points.

MAGIC 60: In the last three seasons, Villanova is 38-5 when holding opponents under 60 points. Thus far this year, Villanova is 9-3 when keeping the opponent under 60 points. Last season, the 'Cats were 17-2 when holding the opposition under 60 points, while in 1996-97, Villanova was a perfect 11-0 when keeping the opponent under 60 points. Also last season, the Wildcats were 14-4 when recording 60 or more points.

WEARING RED: Three members of the 1998-99 Villanova team will redshirt this season. Megan Stewart, a junior from Maroochydore, Australia, will travel to Germany during the second semester to study and master a second language. She will have two years of eligibility remaining when she returns to action next season. Both freshmen on the roster, Nicole Druckenmiller and Daniela Schroeder, are redshirting the 1998-99 season. Druckenmiller is the younger sister of San Francisco 49er quarterback Jim Druckenmiller.
