LAST TIME OUT: NOTRE DAME: The Irish are coming off a 77-49 home win over Seton Hall on Saturday, Feb. 6. Notre Dame led 33-27 at halftime and outscored the Pirates, 44-22, in the second half. Leading the way for the Irish was guard Niele Ivey who tallied a game-high 15 points to go along with 11 assists. Ericka Haney came off the bench to score 14 points for Notre Dame, while forward Kelley Siemon added 10 points. On the backboard, center Ruth Riley grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. The only player in double figures for Seton Hall was Naimah Smith with 11 points. Notre Dame shot 60 percent for the game, while Seton Hall shot just 28 percent from the field.
ON THE AIR: Wednesday's game with No. 6 Notre Dame will be aired on a tape delay basis on 990 AM at 9:30 p.m. Ryan Fannon will call the play-by-play with Whitey Rigsby serving as the color commentator.
RILEY DUE BACK: Sophomore Mimi Riley did not play last Saturday at St. John's due to a sprained ankle suffered in practice on Thursday, Feb. 4. Prior to missing the St. John's game, Riley had played in every game of her Wildcat career (49 consecutive games). A versatile performer, Riley can play both guard spots, as well as the small forward slot. Entering the Notre Dame game, she is averaging 5.6 ppg., 3.1 rpg., and 2.2 apg. in 24 minutes per game.
TIRING DAY: With Mimi Riley not able to play last Saturday at St. John's, the five Villanova starters all played 30+ minutes with guard Lauren Pellicane leading the way with 37 minutes. This was the first time this season that all five starters played 30+ minutes.
ROUND I: Wednesday's game between the Wildcats and Irish is the second meeting this season between the two teams. On Dec. 12 in South Bend, Notre Dame won a nail-biter by a score of 63-62. Notre Dame led by as many as 13 in the second half and were up by six with seven minutes left in regulation. Villanova completed its comeback by tying the game at 56-56 with 3:08 left. The 'Cats took their first lead of the second half when Lauren Pellicane drained a three-point shot with 2:28 remaining in regulation. Following Pellicane's triple, Notre Dame's Sheila McMillen answered with a three of her own to give the Irish a 61-59 advantage. Pellicane wasn't through, however, as she buried her fifth three-pointer of the game to give the Wildcats a slim 62-61 lead with just 42.6 seconds to go in regulation. With 15.7 seconds on the clock, Irish guard Danielle Green hit a 10-foot off balance bank shot for the game-winner. Villanova had two chances to win the game, but sophomore guard Mimi Riley and sophomore center Brandi Barnes both misfired from close range as time expired. In the loss, Villanova was led by Barnes who had 18 points on 9-of-17 shooting and seven rebounds. Pellicane tallied 15 points on five three-point field goals, while junior forward Jenea Skeeters registered 15 points. Notre Dame was paced by Green who had 18 points and sophomore center Ruth Riley who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Villanova shot 42.9 percent from the floor, while Notre Dame shot 47.3 percent from the field. For the game, the Wildcats committed just 10 turnovers.
PELLICANE REACHES 50: Last Saturday at St. John's, sophomore guard Lauren Pellicane went 4-of-6 from three-point range bringing her season total to 50 made three-point field goals. Her 50 three-pointers ranks third in the Big East in three-pointers made. For the year, Pellicane is 50-of-133 from long distance for 37.6 percent. For the season, Pellicane has had at least one three-pointer in 18 of Villanova's 21 games and she has made three or more triples on seven occasions. Pellicane is averaging 8.5 ppg., 2.0 rpg, and 2.6 apg. in a team-leading 32.4 minutes per game. Pellicane replaced graduated senior Jenny Higgins at the two-guard this season. Last season, Higgins led the country with 100 three-point field goals.
FROM DOWNTOWN: In the last nine games, senior forward Jenn Sliwa has made 32 field goals with 22 of them coming from behind the arc. In seven of the last nine contests, she has made at least two three-pointers, including nine in the last three games. For the season, Sliwa has made 34 triples which ranks her second on the team and ninth in the Big East Conference.
ROOKIE REVIEW: Redshirt freshman Stephanie Baker played outstanding basketball last week for the Wildcats. On Tuesday, Feb. 2 against Seton Hall, Baker had her best game in a Wildcat uniform. In the win, Baker scored a career-high 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds in a career-high 22 minutes of action. This past Saturday at St. John's, she tallied five points and six rebounds. In the two games combined last week, Baker was 6-of-10 from the field (60%) to go with 14 rebounds. In her four previous games before last week, Baker had no points in 29 minutes of action. For the season, the Wilmington, Del., native is averaging 3.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg and she is 33-of-73 (45.2 percent) from the field. SKEETERS ON THE RISE: Over the last 14 games, Villanova's most consistent performer has been junior forward Jenea Skeeters. During this 14-game span, Skeeters has reached double figures in points on 11 occasions and is averaging 12.6 ppg., during this stretch. For all games, Skeeters is second on the team in scoring with a 10.7 ppg. However, in just Big East contests, she leads the Wildcats with an 11.9 ppg. average.
FAMILIAR FOE: The University of Notre Dame is no stranger to Wildcat junior forward Jenea Skeeters who grew up just down the road from the Golden Dome in Mishawaka, Ind. Wednesday night's game will be the sixth time Skeeters has played against the Irish. In the previous five games, she has scored 66 points (13.2 ppg) and pulled-down 19 rebounds (3.8 rpg). From three-point range against the Irish, Skeeters is 10-of-24 (41.6%) in five career games.
CLOSING IN: Senior point guard Shanette Lee is on pace to become the all-time assist leader in Villanova women's basketball history. Entering play versus Notre Dame Lee has tallied 496 career assists which ranks her third on Villanova's all-time assist list. For the season, the Philadelphia, Pa., native has 99 assists which ranks her fifth in the Big East. She is just 25 assists short of Lynn Tighe's all-time career best of 521 assists. Tighe is currently Villanova's Senior Women's Administrator.

INDIANA DUO: Villanova gets a great deal of production from its Indiana forward duo of Jenn Sliwa and Jenea Skeeters. Sliwa, a native of Valparaiso, Ind. is averaging 8.5 ppg., 3.5 rpg., and 2.1 apg., in 26.0 minutes of action, while Skeeters, a native of Mishawaka, Ind., is averaging 10.7 ppg., 4.5 rpg., 2.4 apg, and 1.0 spg in 31.8 minutes of action. The duo are also two of the team's top defenders. Sliwa and Skeeters are also neck and neck on the all-time Villanova scoring chart, as the two Hoosier state natives have scored the same number of career points. A fifth year senior, Sliwa has 873 points in 102 career games, while the junior Skeeters has scored 873 career points in 78 career contests. Sliwa and Skeeters currently rank 20th on the Villanova all-time scoring list. They are just one point behind Stephanie Vanderslice who currently ranks 19th on the scoring chart and are 15 points behind Mary Beth Gibson (888 points) who is 18th on the Villanova scoring list.
LEADING THE WAY: Villanova is led offensively by sophomore center Brandi Barnes who leads the team in scoring (10.9 ppg.), rebounds (6.0 rpg.), field goal percentage (101-for-210 for 48.1%) and blocked shots (18). For the season, Barnes has scored in double figures in 13 of Villanova's 21 games. Barnes sat out last season after transferring from the University of Maryland.
SUPER SUB: In the last eight games, Villanova has gotten a solid contribution from reserve guard Mary Beth Snell. During the past eight contests, Snell is 16-of-29 (55.1%) from the field, including an 11-of-25 (44%) effort from three-point range. For the season, Snell has played in all 21 games and is averaging 3.0 ppg. She is third on the team in three-point field goals made with 17. In her last outing versus St. John's, Snell played a season-high tying 19 minutes and connected on 2-of-4 from the field with all four attempts coming from behind the arc.
THREE-POINT STORY: The three-point arc is very important to the Villanova game plan. Entering each contest, Villanova's philosophy is to on one hand frequently shoot the three-pointer, while on the other hand stop the opponent from shooting the three-ball. After 21 games, Villanova is 121-of-360 (33.6%) from three-point range, while their opponents are just 48-of-179 (26.8%) from behind the arc. Villanova is averaging 5.7 made three-pointers a game and are attempting 17.1 three's a game. Defensively, Villanova is holding opponents to 2.4 made three-pointers a game in an average of 8.5 attempts per contest. The Wildcats are currently second in the Big East in three-point field goal defense.
DEFENSE: Strong defense has always been a trademark of Harry Perretta coached teams. Dating back to the 1994-95 campaign, Villanova has never given up more than 60 points per game in a season. After 21 games this year, Villanova is yielding just 57.5 ppg. and have held five opponents under 50 points and 13 opponents under 60 points. The Wildcats are currently second in the Big East and ninth in the nation in scoring defense. Last season, the Wildcats held their opponents to just 56.4 ppg, which led the Big East Conference and ranked sixth nationally. In 17 of the team's 19 wins in 1997-98, Villanova held its opponents under 60 points and they held seven teams under 50 points.
MAGIC 60: In the last three seasons, Villanova is 38-5 when holding opponents under 60 points. Thus far this year, Villanova is 9-3 when keeping the opponent under 60 points. Last season, the 'Cats were 17-2 when holding the opposition under 60 points, while in 1996-97, Villanova was a perfect 11-0 when keeping the opponent under 60 points. Also last season, the Wildcats were 14-4 when recording 60 or more points.
THE GOOD HANDS PEOPLE: Traditionally, under the direction of head coach Harry Perretta, the Villanova Wildcats have always done a good job of taking care of the basketball and this year's Villanova team is no different. After 21 games, the 'Cats have committed 274 turnovers for an average of 13.0 per game which leads the Big East Conference in fewest turnovers. The team's season low this season was five against the LaSalle Explorers. Villanova has had 10 or less turnovers five times this season. In Perretta's 21 years as the Wildcats head coach, Villanova has never averaged more than 15 turnovers a game in one season.
WEARING RED: Three members of the 1998-99 Villanova team will redshirt this season. Megan Stewart, a junior from Maroochydore, Australia, will travel to Germany during the second semester to study and master a second language. She will have two years of eligibility remaining when she returns to action next season. Both freshmen on the roster, Nicole Druckenmiller and Daniela Schroeder, are redshirting the 1998-99 season. Druckenmiller is the younger sister of San Francisco 49er quarterback Jim Druckenmiller.
