VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova looks to improve its winning streak to seven in a row when the Wildcats travel to Providence on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The Wildcats enter play with a 15-2 overall record and a 4-0 Big East mark, while the Friars are 5-12 overall and 0-4 in league play. Tip-off at Alumni Hall is set for 7 p.m.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series against Providence by a 36-24 count. Villanova has had the upper hand in the series of late. Entering play on Wednesday, Villanova has won 15 of the last 18 meetings against Providence.
Of all the opponents Villanova has faced over the years, the Wildcats have played Providence more than any other team. Wednesday's game between the schools will be the 61st all-time meeting (Villanova leads 36-24). Pittsburgh ranks second as the team Villanova has played the most at 55 times.
For the second straight week, senior forward Laura Sweeney has earned a spot on the Big East Honor Roll. In addition, she was named the Philadelphia Big Five Women's Player of the Week. In wins over Penn and South Florida, Sweeney had two-game totals of 35 points, 19 rebounds, four blocks, three assists and two steals. She shot 13-of-21 from the field for .620.
Villanova is led by Sweeney who leads the team in scoring (13.0 ppg.), rebounding (6.4 rpg.), field goal percentage (.560), steals (42) and blocks (30). Senior guard Rachel Roberts ranks second in scoring at 10.4 points per game, while freshman Caroline Coyer has a team-best 44 assists.
