CENTER-OF-ATTENTION: For the first time in years, the Villanova Wildcats have a presence at center with 6-3 sophomore Brandi Barnes who has started her Villanova career off in fine fashion. After 10 games, Barnes leads Villanova in scoring (13.4 ppg), rebounding (6.6 rpg), blocked shots (9) and field goal percentage (53.6%). Barnes sat out last season after transferring from the University of Maryland. GETTING-OFFENSIVE: In 10 game this season, Brandi Barnes has grabbed a team-best 66 rebounds. Of her 66 boards, 32 have been offensive rebounds. CAREER-HIGH FOR BAKER: Redshirt freshman Stephanie Baker came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting in last Tuesdays loss to No.1 Connecticut. Baker also had a strong game at the foul line making 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Before this 4-of-5 performance from the foul line, Baker was just 3-of-15 from the free throw stripe. A 1997 third team Parade Magazine High School All-American, Baker has emerged as one of Villanovas top reserves. After 10 games, she is averaging 4.9 ppg., 3.9 rpg., and is shooting 46.7 percent from the field (21-of-45) in 13.2 minutes per game.
BEHIND-THE-ARC: Sophomore guard Lauren Pellicane has been shooting the ball extremely well from three-point range. In the last six games, the Deer Park, N.Y. native is 18-of-33 (.545) from behind the stripe. Her best outing of the season came against Temple on Dec. 5, when she made 7-of-10 from the field, including a 6-of-9 effort from three-point range for a career-high 20 points. In addition, she tallied a career-best eight assists versus the Owls. Against Notre Dame on Dec. 12, Pellicane scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting including a 5-of-9 effort from three-point range. For the year, Pellicane is averaging 8.2 ppg., 3.0 assists per game and she has made a team-high 24 three-point field goals. Pellicane is also one of the teams top defenders. DEFENSE: Strong defense has always been a trademark of Harry Perretta coached teams. Dating back to the 1994-95 campaign, Villanova has never given up more than 60 points per game in a season. After 10 games this year, Villanova is yielding just 58.8 ppg. and have held two opponents under 50 points and five opponents under 60 points. The Wildcats are currently 18th in the country in scoring defense. Last season, the Wildcats held their opponents to just 56.4 ppg, which led the Big East Conference and ranked sixth nationally. In 17 of the teams 19 wins in 1997-98, Villanova held its opponents under 60 points and they held seven teams under 50 points. SKEETERS TIES CAREER-HIGH: Junior forward Jenea Skeeters did not do much in the scoring department last Tuesday versus Connecticut as she was held scoreless on 0-of-2 shooting. However, Skeeters did manage to contribute in other ways, including tying a career-high with four assists and pulling-down four rebounds. The other time she tallied four assists in her career also came against Connecticut on March 2, 1997 in the first round of the Big East Tournament. CHASING HISTORY: Senior point guard Shanette Lee is on pace to become the all-time assist leader in Villanova womens basketball history. Entering play versus Connecticut, Lee has 444 career assists which places her fifth on the all-time list. She is just 77 assists short of Lynn Tighes all-time career best of 521 assists. Tighe is currently Villanovas Senior Womens Administrator. TOP-RESERVES: Redshirt freshman Stephanie Baker and sophomore Mimi Riley have emerged as head coach Harry Perrettas top reserves. Baker, the first forward/center of the bench, has been very productive in the minutes she has logged. Averaging 13.2 minutes per contest, Baker is averaging 4.9 ppg. and 3.9 rpg. Of her 39 rebounds, 13 have been offensive. Riley is a versatile performer who sees time at both guard spots as well as the small forward slot. Riley is currently averaging 5.8 ppg., 2.9 rpg. and 1.9 apg. Known for her slashing ability, Riley has improved her jump shot from a year ago. She is currently 21-of-51 (41.2%) from the field
