Wildcats Advance to Tournament Championship
In the first round of the St. Mary's (CA) Thanksgiving Tournament, the Villanova women's basketball team earned its first win of the season by defeating the University of Alabama Birmingham, 68-52. With the win, Villanova improves to 1-0, while UAB falls to 0-1.
Villanova came out strong as they opened up an early 15-7 lead with all 15 points coming from behind the three-point arc, as senior Jenny Higgins nailed three treys and junior Jenn Sliwa recorded two three-point field goals. The Wildcats would go on take a 38-29 lead into intermission.
UAB came out strong in the second half as they cut the Villanova lead to three with 15 minutes left, before the Cats regained control of the game. The Wildcats would go on to outscore UAB 30-23 in the second half and cruise to the 68-52 win.
The Wildcats were led by senior Jenn Beisel who had 18 points and six rebounds and junior guard Shanette Lee who tallied 12 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Also in double figures for Villanova were sophomore Jenea Skeeters who had 12 points and Higgins who finished with 12 points on four three-point field goals.
With the win, Villanova advances to Saturday's championship game against the winner of Virginia Tech and the host school St. Mary's. Tip-off for Saturday's championship game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. pacific time.
