Wildcats Fall to Lasalle in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA--In women's basketball action at Philadelphia Textile's Bucky Harris Gymnaisum, the Villanova Widcats lost to LaSalle by a score of 66-61. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 0-1, while LaSalle improves to 2-0 on the season.

With the score tied 16-16 at the 9:02 mark of the first half, LaSalle went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-16 lead with 5:24 left in first half. In the run, four different Explorers scored. After a Jenny Higgins jumper made it 25-18, LaSalle finished the half on an 11-3 run to take a 36-21 lead at intermision.

In the first half, LaSalle was led by freshman guard Jen Zenszer who had nine points. Villanova was paced by Higgins who tallied 11 first half points. Villanova stormed out of the locker room, as they began the second half on a 17-2 run to tie the game at 38-38 with 13:06 left in regulation. The run was fueled by full-court pressure defense that forced LaSalle into six turnovers in the first seven minutes of the half. Senior Jenn Beisel highlighted the Wildcat spurt by scoring 13 points.

LaSalle answered the Villanova run by outscoring Villanova, 10-2, over the next three minutes to take a 48-40 lead with 10:24 to play. However, Villanova fought back again and tied the game at 53-53 with 4:19 left in the second half.

With the score 57-56 LaSalle with 3:15 remaining in regulation, the Explorers tallied six of eight points from the charity stripe to gain a 65-56 advantage with 00:36 remaining. The Explorers would go on the record the 66-61 win.

LaSalle was led by Zenszer who scored a game-high 18 points and senior Katie Wolfe who netted 13 points. Leading the way for Villanova was Beisel who scored all 17 of her points in the second half and Higgins who finished with 14 pointers including four three-point field goals.

Villanova will return to action on Friday, Nov. 28 when they face Alabama-Birmingham in the first round of the St. Mary's (CA) Tournament.
