Wildcats Roll to Exhibition Win

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Tonight, in women's basketball exhibition play at The Pavilion, Villanova routed the New York Gazelles by a score of 90-51. The Wildcats, who finish exhibition play with a 2-0 record, open the 1997-98 season on Monday, Nov. 24 at Philadelphia Big Five rival LaSalle. Due to LaSalle's gym being under construction, the game will be played at Philadelphia Textile.

With the score tied at 12-12 with 10:45 to play in the first half, Villanova went on a 16-5 run over the next six minutes to take a 28-17 advantage with 4:27 left in the first stanza. The run was highlighted by junior Jenn Sliwa who tallied eight points, including two three-point field goals. Villanova would then outscore the Gazelles 12-3 over the final four minutes of the half to take a commanding 40-20 lead at halftime.

The Gazelles would cut the lead to 42-26 with 17:00 minutes remaining in the game, before Villanova used an 18-4 run and gain a 60-30 lead with 12:36 to play. Villanova would cruise the rest of the way and earn the 90-51 victory.

Sliwa led the way for Villanova with 18 points and nine rebounds. Two other Wildcats scored double figures including sophomore guard Mary Beth Snell who had 12 points and junior center Priscilla Rosenthal who registered 11 points and eight rebounds.

Leading the way for the New York Gazelles was Tamara Aponte with 13 points and Gail Bryant who netted 11 points and seven rebounds.
