Wildcat Women Win Exhibition
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Tonight, in women's basketball at Jake Nevin Field House, the Villanova Wildcats defeated RTU-Klondaika, Riga, Latvia by a score of 72-62 in exhibition play.
With the score 11-8 Villanova with 14:08 to play in the first half, the Wildcats used a 9-3 spurt to take their biggest lead of the first stanza at 20-11. The run was highlighted by sophomore Mary Beth Snell who drained two three-point field goals. Latvia cut the lead to 24-23 with 5:05 remaining in the first half, before Villanova finished the half on a 7-2 run to take a 31-25 lead at halftime.
In the first half, Villanova was led by sophomore Jenea Skeeters with seven points along with senior Jenn Beisel and Snell who each tallied six. Latvia was paced by Inara Jekabsone who had 10 first half points.
The Wildcats came out of the locker room strong as Beisel and Skeeters each scored a field goal giving Villanova a 35-25 advantage. Latvia responded with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 37-35 lead with 14:27 to play.
Leading 45-43 with 10:39 left in regulation, Villanova took command of the game with a 12-4 run, giving the Cats a 57-47 lead with 6:24 to play. In the 12-4 run, junior Priscilla Rosenthal added four points, while sophomore Megan Stewart, junior Shanette Lee and Beisel each added two points apiece. Villanova would increase its lead to 64-51 with 4:00 left, before cruising to the 66-54 win.
Leading the way for Villanova were Skeeters with 16 points, Beisel with 13 points and Snell who added 12. Rosenthal had a strong outing for the Wildcats with eight points and nine rebounds. Latvia was led by Gunta Basko who tallied a game-high 26 points and Jekabsone who finished with 17.
Villanova returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 18 as they finish-up exhibition play with a game versus the New York Gazelles. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at The Pavilion.
