Women's Basketball Defeats La Salle in City Series Opener, 70-56
Nov. 28, 2000 Villanova, Pa. - For the fourth straight game, the Villanova Wildcat women's basketball team drilled 10 three-pointers, and for the third straight game, junior guard Mimi Riley, did not allow a turnover. The continuation of both streaks allowed the Wildcats to earn their fourth straight victory, defeating Big Five rival La Salle University, 70-56. With the victory Villanova improves their record to 4-1 on the season, while La Salle falls to 2-1. To begin the game, Villanova jumped to an early 7-0 advantage. Sophomore forward Katie Davis began the game on fire, scoring a three-pointer and lay-up in the game's opening minute. The Explorers responded over the next eight minutes putting together a 22-12 run. The run earned La Salle a 22-19 lead. Villanova fought back, ending the half with a 31-27 advantage. Leading the scoring for Villanova in the first half was Davis who recorded nine points. For La Salle Shannon McDade and Jen Zenszer each netted eight points. In the first four minutes of the second half, the teams traded baskets. From that point on Villanova dominated. The Wildcats hit on seven of 14 three pointers to put the game away. Davis, Pellicane and Juhline all drained threes during a 15-6 run that extended Villanova's lead to 10, 51-41. For the game, the Wildcats shot 40 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from three-point range and 88.9 percent from the charity stripe. La Salle was not as productive, connecting on 38.6 percent of their shots, 18.2 percent from long distance and 83.3 from the free throw line.
Davis and fellow sophomore Trish Juhline led the Wildcats in scoring with 14. Juhline not only recorded 14 points, but she handed out three assists, grabbed three rebounds and rejected four shots. Also, scoring in double-digits for Villanova was senior center Brandi Barnes. Barnes scored 11 points. In addition, she hauled in two boards, distributed two assists and tallied two steals.
Again stealing the show for Villanova was junior guard Mimi Riley. Riley has now gone 108 consecutive minutes without allowing a turnover. The point guard's streak extends over three games. During that span she has also been prolific in distributing the basketball, by handing out 24 assists. Other scorers for the Wildcats included Riley, Lauren Pellicane and Stephanie Baker. The three tallied a combined 22 points in the game. Riley connected for nine points, while Pellicane scored eight and Baker recorded five. Rounding out the scoring for Villanova was Kelly Nash with three points, Jeanine Johnson, Courtney Mix and Nicole Druckenmiller with two. La Salle's McDade led all players in the game with 17 points. The Explorer forward set a career milestone in the beginning of the second half, by netting her 1,000th career point. The Wildcats will be in action next at home on Saturday, December 2, at 2pm against Temple University. |
