FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sophomores Lisa Karcic (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Siobhan O'Connor (West Chester, Pa.) each scored a career-high 16 points and Villanova (1-2) held Fairfield (0-2) to just 25 percent (14-of-56) shooting in a 51-37 victory on Friday evening at Alumni Hall.
The Wildcats opened the game with a 10-2 run and never trailed along the way to picking up their first win of the season. O'Connor scored 14 of her points in the second half and Villanova never led by fewer than seven points after the opening minute of the period.
O'Connor was 5-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 at the foul line and also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds. It was the second straight outing that O'Connor tallied a career-best point total. Meanwhile, Karcic was 6-for-12 on the evening and also finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
In the first half, the Wildcats made eight of their first 14 shots and led 18-7 midway through the period. Despite going 1-for-11 from the field over the rest of the half, Villanova held on to a 22-17 lead at the intermission as the Stags connected on just 25 percent (6-of-24) shooting from the floor.
Sabra Wrice made a free throw 48 seconds into the second half to draw Fairfield to within 22-18, but senior forward Jackie Adamshick (Allentown, Pa.) made a three-pointer moments after to restore the lead to seven, 25-18. O'Connor and Karcic combined to score 15 of the next 16 team points as the Wildcats maintained a comfortable lead. Villanova made 5-of-6 free throws in the last 5:14 to prevent any comeback bid by the Stags.
Adamshick finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, who owned a 43-38 edge on the glass. Villanova wound up shooting 36 percent (18-of-50) from the field and overcame 21 turnovers on the evening.
Baendu Lowenthal led Fairfield with 14 points and Wrice had 13.
The Wildcats return home on Sunday at 2 p.m. to take on Marist.
NOTES: Villanova is 35-7 (.833) all-time against teams from the MAAC, including 8-0 against the Stags ... Tonight's win was the 13th straight for the Wildcats against MAAC competition since the 1994-95 season and is 46-15 (.754) against non-conference opposition since the beginning of the 2002-03 season ... The 37 points scored by Fairfield marked the fewest for a Villanova opponent since the Wildcats edged Boston College 41-37 on March 6, 2005 in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament ... The 43 rebounds were the most for the Wildcats since the squad had 44 caroms against Mississippi on November 25, 2005 ... O'Connor had 10 points on Tuesday night in a 74-62 loss to La Salle, the only previous time she reached double figures in scoring ... Karcic and O'Connor accounted for 23 of the 29 Villanova points in the second half ... Adamshick rebounded in double figures for the first time this season and ninth time in her career.
