HARTFORD, CONN -- The Villanova Wildcats made 17 three-point field goals en route to an 89-58 win over the Georgetown Hoyas in the second round of the Big East Tournament. The 17 triples establishes a new Big East Tournament record for three-pointers made in a game.
With the win, Villanova improves to 21-9 overall, while Georgetown falls to 15-16 on the season. The Wildcats will advance to tomorrow night's quarterfinal round against the Syracuse Orange. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPNU.
Villanova made nine of its first 11 three-point field goal attempts and owned a 38-19 lead with 6:08 to play in the first half. Senior guard Rachel Roberts and sophomore forward Lauren Burford combined to connect on five of the nine three-pointers with Roberts making three and Burford two.
The Wildcats finished the first half shooting 59.3 percent from the field (16-of-27), including a sizzling 66.7 percent from behind the arc (10-of-15). Villanova would use the red shot shooting and go to intermission with a 50-27 lead.
Georgetown also shot the ball well in the first half. The Hoyas were 11-of-18 from the field (61.1%) and 4-of-6 from downtown (66.7%). Hoya senior guard Sugar Rodgers had 18 of her team's 27 first half points.
Villanova started the second half by outscoring Georgetown by a 15-6 margin over the first seven minutes to take a commanding 65-33 lead with 13:03 to play. The Wildcats would lead by as many as 37 in the second half and cruise to the easy victory.
In the win, senior forward Laura Sweeney led three Villanova players in double figures with 17 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Burford had 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three, while Roberts added 13 points and five assists. Freshman guard Caroline Coyer made her return to the line-up after missing six weeks with a hand injury and had nine points and four assists. Senior forward Megan Pearson chipped in with eight points.
Georgetown was paced by Rodgers who set a Big East Tournament record for points in a game with 42. Rodgers was 15-of-30 from the field, 6-of-12 from three-point range and 6-of-9 from the foul line.
For the game, Villanova was 29-of-56 from the field (51.8%), 17-of-31 from three-point range (54.8%) and 14-of-16 from the foul line (87.5%), while the Hoyas shot 44.9 percent from the floor (22-of-49), 40.0 percent from three-point range (6-of-15) and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe (8-of-13). Villanova owned a slim 30-28 advantage on the backboards. The Wildcats committed just seven turnovers.
NOTES: The 89 points scored by Villanova are the most ever by a Wildcat team in the Big East Tournament...The last time Villanova had 89 points in a game came on Jan. 3, 2001, in a 98-60 win over West Virginia...Villanova improves to 31-26 all-time in the Big East Tournament...With seven turnovers tonight, Villanova now has 11 single digit turnover games this season...Villanova had an assist on 24 of its 29 field goals...Laura Sweeney now has 25 double figure scoring games this season and 86 for her career...The Wildcats improve to 6-0 this year when scoring 70 or more points.
