Villanova Falls to Marquette 53-49 in BIG EAST Championship First Round

The Villanova Wildcats saw its 2009-10 season come to a close on Friday, March 5, in the first round of the Big East Tournament with a 53-49 loss to Marquette. With the loss, the Wildcats finish the year with a 14-16 overall record.
Marquette held an 11-8 lead at the 11:34 mark of the first half, when the Golden Eagles used a 7-2 run to grab an 18-10 advantage with 9:24 remaining. Marquette would go to intermission with a 25-18 advantage.
Villanova struggled shooting the ball in the first half, as the 'Cats connected on just 28.6 percent from the field (8-of-28), including a 2-of-11 effort from behind the arc (18.2%). Marquette was 11-of-26 from the field in the first stanza for 42.3 percent.
The Golden Eagles controlled the first part of the second half. Two free throws by Paige Fiedorowicz gave Marquette its biggest lead of the game at 36-25 with 13:44 to play.
Villanova trailed 47-39 at the 5:03 mark when the Wildcats converted back-to-back lay-ups by Jesse Carey and Shannon Elliott to cut the lead to 47-43. Marquette's Angel Robinson answered with a lay-up of her own to increase the Golden Eagle advantage to 49-43 with 2:36 to play.
Wildcat senior guard Maria Getty made a short jumper to make it 49-45. After a defensive stop, senior guard Kyle Dougherty banked in a driving lay-up to pull Villanova to within two at 49-47 with 54 seconds left. Getty then fouled Robinson who made both ends of a one-and-one to give Marquette a 51-47 lead.
Carey kept Villanova's hopes alive with a lay-up at the 39 second mark and the 'Cats needed a defensive stop. Villanova would not get the stop as Robinson drove the lane and made an off balance lay-up with 11 seconds left to seal the win for the Golden Eagles.
In the loss, Villanova was paced by Getty who had 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Elliott chipped in with nine points, while Dougherty added eight. Marquette was paced by freshman Sarina Simmons with 13 points and Jessica Pachko with 10 points and nine boards.
Villanova shot 33.3 percent from the field (20-of-60), 25.0 percent from three-point range (7-of-28) and were 2-of-2 from the foul line, while Marquette was 21-of-54 from the floor (38.9%), 3-of-12 from long distance (25.0%) and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe (72.7%). The Golden Eagles owned a 38-33 advantage on the backboards.
