HARTFORD, Conn. - Villanova advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2005 Big East Tournament with a convincing 67-39 win over Providence in a game played on Saturday, March 5 at the Hartford Civic Center. With the win, the 18-10 Wildcats will now play Boston College in Sunday's first quarterfinal game at noon. Providence finishes the year at 1-27.
Providence led 7-6 just four minutes into the game, before Villanova went on a 17-0 run to take a 23-7 advantage at the 9:39 mark. The run was highlighted by the play of sophomore center Katia Levitsky who had six of Villanova's 17 points in the spurt.
The Wildcats shot an impressive 50.0 percent from the floor in the first half and went to intermission with a 31-16 advantage. The Friars were just 7-f-23 from the field in the first half for 30.4 percent.
Villanova put the game away early in the second stanza with a 15-2 run to start the half and lead 46-18 with 10:24 left on the clock. Junior Liad Suez had seven points in the run, while senior center Jana Rediger added four.
Suez finished the game with a team-high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go with six rebounds, while Levitsky had 11 points and sophomore Jackie Adamshick netted 10. Rediger contributed six points and six rebounds and junior forward Kate Dessart Mager tallied eight points and five rebounds.
Providence was paced by sophomore Shuana Snyder with 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Jill Furstenburg had 10 points, while Kris Baugh added 10 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Villanova finished the game shooting 52.6 percent from the field (30-of-57), 28.6 percent from three-point range (4-of-14) and 60.0 percent from the foul line (3-of-5), while the Friars were 17-of-50 from the field (34,0%), 3-of-7 from long distance (42.9%) and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe (66.7%). Villanova out-rebounded the Friars, 36-27.
NOTES: Villanova has now won its first game in the Big East Tournament in 10 of the last 11 years...The Wildcats will be making their 11 consecutive appearance in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament...Over the last three seasons, the `Cats are 47-3 when scoring 60 points or more...Katia Levitsky's 11 points is a new career-high...With five turnovers versus Providence, Villanova has now had single digit turnovers in 13 of 28 games this year.
