NEW YORK - In women's basketball action on Saturday, Feb. 25, the Villanova Wildcats suffered a 69-49 defeat to the No. 20 St. John's Red Storm. With the loss, Villanova falls to 15-13 overall and 5-10 in Big East play, while the Red Storm improve to 20-8 overall and 12-3 in conference action.

St. John's led 12-10 with 11:38 to play in the first half, when the Red Storm went on an 11-3 run to open up a 23-13 advantage at the 6:42 mark. Junior guard Eugeneia McPherson highlighted the run for the Red Storm with five points, including a triple from the right wing.

The Red Storm shot 51.9 percent in the first half on 14-of-27 shooting from the field. Villanova was 9-of-23 from the floor in the first stanza, including a 6-of-13 mark from three-point range.

In the first half, Wildcat senior Lindsay Kimmel led the way for Villanova with nine points. St. John's was paced in the first 20 minutes by McPherson with 11 points.

St. John's took control of the game early in the second half. The Red Storm outscored Villanova by a 17-8 margin over the first nine minutes to take a 51-34 advantage with 11:23 remaining.

The Red Storm would lead by as many as 26 in the second half to cruise to the victory. In the win, Da'Shenea Stevens led four St. John's players in double figures with 21 points. Stevens scored 13 of her 21 from the foul line. McPherson scored 13 points for St. John's, while Nadirah McKenith netted 11 points and Shenneika Smith added 10.

Kimmel led Villanova with 11 points. Redshirt freshman center Emily Leer added 10 points off the bench for the Wildcats. She was 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

For the game, Villanova shot 35.6 percent from the field (16-of-45), 31.8 percent from three-point range (7-of-22) and 76.9 percent from the foul line (10-of-13), while the Red Storm was 23-of-48 from the field (47.9%), 2-of-3 from long distance (66.7%) and 21-of-27 from the charity stripe (77.8%). St. John's dominated the glass by out-rebounding the Wildcats by a 38-19 margin.



Villanova will conclude the 2011-12 regular season on Monday, Feb. 27, with a home game versus the Syracuse Orange. Tip-off at The Pavilion is set for 7 p.m.
