VILLANOVA, Pa. - In women's basketball action on Sunday, Feb. 10, the Marquette Golden Eagles tallied a 60-56 road win over the Villanova Wildcats. With the victory, Marquette improves to 12-11 overall and 4-6 in Big East play, while Villanova falls to 16-7 overall and 5-5 in league action.
It was all offense in the first half, as both teams shot over 50 percent in the first stanza. The Wildcats were 15-of-26 for 57.7 percent in the first 20 minutes, while Marquette was 16-of-29 for 55.2 percent.
Marquette made 10 of its first 13 shots to start the game and led 21-18 at the 11:34 mark. The Golden Eagles would increase their lead to 30-25 with 8:49 to play in the first half. Villanova then went on a 9-2 run to take 34-32 advantage with 5:02 on the clock. Wildcat senior guard Rachel Roberts hit a three-ball and converted a driving lay-up for five of her team's nine points in the run.
Villanova would use the momentum from the run and go to halftime with a 39-37 lead.
The second half went back and forth as neither team was able to open up more than a five point lead the entire way. Trailing 43-39, Wildcat senior forward Laura Sweeney scored consecutive baskets to tie the score at 43-43 with 13:40 to play. Following a bucket by Marquette forward Sarina Simmons that gave the Golden Eagles a two point lead, Roberts answered on the other end and tied the game at 45-45 on a driving left-handed lay-up.
A Taylor Holeman jumper gave the Wildcats a 49-47 lead with 7:00 left in the game. This would prove to be Villanova's last lead of the game. Following the Holeman basket, Marquette used a 6-0 run to lead 53-49 at the 4:39 mark. Two baskets by Katherine Plouffe and a 10-foot jumper by Arlesia Morse accounted for the Marquette points in the spurt.
Two Sweeney foul shots pulled Villanova to within two at 55-53 with 2:12 on the clock. Marquette missed three consecutive shots on the game's next possession, but the Golden Eagles managed three offensive rebounds. Simmons rewarded her team for the scrappy play when she buried a three-pointer from the top of the key. The triple gave Marquette a 58-53 advantage with 1:17 remaining.
Lauren Burford converted an offensive rebound for a basket on the next Wildcat possession to cut the Golden Eagle lead to three at 58-55. Villanova got a defensive stop and Roberts was fouled driving to the basket. Roberts made one of two from the line to slice the Marquette advantage to 58-56 with 11 seconds left. Plouffe put the game away for Marquette when she sank two free throws.
In the loss, Sweeney scored a season-high 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, including a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range and a 6-of-8 effort from the foul line. She was the only Wildcat in double figures. Plouffe paced the Golden Eagles with 15 points, while Simmons added 13 points.
For the game, Villanova shot 41.2 percent from the field (21-of-51), 26.1 percent from three-point range (6-of-23) and 61.5 percent from the foul line (8-of-13), while Marquette was 25-of-57 from the floor (43.9%), 3-of-11 from behind the arc (27.3%) and 7-of-14 from the charity stripe (50.0%). Marquette owned a 42-27 advantage on the backboards. Villanova had just five turnovers in the losing effort.
Villanova returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13, with a game at Seton Hall. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
