Villanova Downs Seton Hall 62-53

VILLANOVA, Pa. - In women's basketball action on Tuesday, Jan. 31, Villanova tallied a 62-53 win over Seton Hall in a game played at The Pavilion. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 14-8 overall and 4-5 in Big East play, while the Pirates fall to 7-16 overall and 0-9 in conference play.
Villanova started the game strong, as the Wildcats raced to a 20-6 lead. Junior forward Laura Sweeney scored six of her team's first 20 points and the Wildcats went 4-of-6 from three-point range in the first nine minutes of the half.
The Wildcats held a 28-15 advantage with 2:29 left in the first half, when the Pirates finished the half on a 6-0 run to close the Villanova lead to 28-21 at intermission.
Seton Hall would score the first four points of the second half to slice the Villanova advantage to 28-25. The Wildcats ended the 10-0 Pirate that carried over from the first half with back-to-back three-point field goals by redshirt freshman Lauren Burford and senior Lindsay Kimmel.
The Pirates came right back and scored on four of their next five possessions to cut the Villanova lead to two at 35-33 with 14:35 remaining. Sweeney had the answer for the Wildcats. First she scored on a driving lay-up and then she nailed a three-point field goal from the left corner to push Villanova's lead back to seven at 40-33.
Holding a 42-35 lead at the 9:33 mark, Villanova used a 9-4 spurt to take a 51-39 advantage with 6:37 to play. Consecutive three-point field goals by Burford and a triple by Megan Pearson accounted for the nine points. After the Pirates cut the lead to 58-51 with 1:25 to play, junior Rachel Roberts went four-of-four from the foul line down the stretch to secure the win.
In the win, Burford led the `Cats with 17 points, while Sweeney added 16 points and Roberts chipped in with 10. Sweeney also grabbed a game-high tying nine rebounds. Burford was 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range.
Seton Hall was paced by Jasmine Crew with 24 points and nine caroms.
For the game, Villanova shot 40.0 percent from the field (20-of-50), 44.4 percent from three-point range (12-of-27) 83.3 percent from the foul line (10-of-12), while the Pirates were 21-of-57 from the floor (36.8%), 2-of-9 from long distance (22.2%) and 9-of-14 from the charity stripe (64.3%). Seton Hall owned a 40-31 advantage on the backboards. The Wildcats had 11 turnovers, while the Pirates had nine turnovers.
Villanova returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when the Wildcats host Providence. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. The annual alumnae game will be played prior to the Wildcats and Friars at 11:30 a.m.
