SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The host Orange shutout visiting Villanova (11-7, 4-3 Big East) over the last 5:17 of the game, and Syracuse (11-8, 3-5 BE) scored the final six points of the game to defeat the Wildcats 45-42 on Saturday afternoon at Manley Fieldhouse.
After a jumper by junior forward Liad Suez (Even-Yehuda, Israel) gave Villanova a 42-39 lead with 5:17 remaining, the Wildcats came up empty the rest of the way. Villanova missed its final six shots, and Syracuse took the lead for good with 1:13 remaining on a jumper by Vaida Sipaviciute.
The Wildcats had two chances to get the lead back in the final minute, but came up short on a pair of jumpers with 46 and 10 seconds remaining, respectively. Syracuse then sealed the game with a pair of free throws with one second left.
Sophomore forward Jackie Adamshick (Allentown, Pa.) scored a team-high 12 points to lead the Wildcats, while senior guard Jennifer Hilgenberg (Readington, N.J.) scored 10 points. Suez and senior center Jana Rediger (Sellersville, Pa.) each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Sipaviciute led the Orange with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Chineze Nwagbo contributed 11 points and five boards.
Earlier in the second half, Villanova used a 12-0 run in a span of 5:37 to take a 40-36 lead. Hilgenberg drained a three-pointer and had a three-point play during the run, in which Syracuse was 0-for-6 from the field and turned the ball over twice.
The Orange closed the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 26-20 lead at intermission, and stretched the margin to 36-28 with 14:01 to play before the Wildcats rallied.
The loss snapped Villanova's modest two-game winning streak, and denied head coach Harry Perretta his 500th career win. Perretta will once again look to become the 26th women's head coach in school history when the Wildcats visit Pittsburgh on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
