VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova made 10 three-point field goals and held visiting Xavier to 24.6 percent shooting en route to a 61-32 victory. With the win, Villanova improves to 14-5 overall and 4-4 in Big East play, while Xavier falls to 8-12 on the year and 3-5 in conference action.
The 32 points scored by Xavier are the fewest points ever allowed by the Wildcats in a Big East Conference game. The previous low was 33 against St. John's in a 49-33 win on Feb. 4, 2009.
Emily Leer, Lauren Burford and Katherine Coyer made consecutive three-point field goals on Villanova's first three possessions of the game as the Wildcats raced to a 9-0 lead. On the defensive end, the Wildcats held Xavier to just six points over the first 9:19. The defensive effort allowed Villanova to open up a 16-6 advantage at the 11:49 mark.
Leading 22-11 with 8:52 to play in the first half, Villanova outscored the Musketeers by a 16-2 margin the rest of the half to take a commanding 38-13 lead at intermission. Five different Wildcats scored during the run, including sophomore guard Katherine Coyer who had seven of her team's 16 points. After Coyer made a three with 1:04 to play, the Wildcats got a defensive stop, before Leer buried a triple from the corner to send the Wildcats to intermission with the 25 point advantage.
Villanova finished the first half shooting 53.6 percent from the floor (15-of-28), including a 6-of-12 effort from three-point range, while Xavier was 6-of-27 from the field (22.2%) and 1-of-12 from long distance (8.3%).
The Wildcats started the second half in similar fashion as they did the game by making the first three shots from behind the arc. Burford started the stretch with a trifecta just 12 seconds into the second stanza. Senior guard Devon Kane and sophomore forward Kavunaa Edwards accounted for the other two triples. The three by Edwards gave Villanova a 47-15 lead with 16:15 remaining.
Villanova would lead by as many as 36 in the second half and cruise to the victory.
In the win, Kane led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field to go with seven rebounds and three steals. Leer finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Katherine Coyer had 10 points with all 10 coming in the first half. Edwards added seven rebounds and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Xavier was paced by Shatyra Hawkes who had nine points and seven rebounds.
For the game, Villanova shot 15-of-28 from the field (53.6%), 10-of-27 from three-point range (37.0%) and 3-of-4 from the foul line (75.0%), while Xavier shot 24.6 percent from the floor (14-of-57), 11.1 percent from long distance (2-of-18) and 40.0 percent from the charity stripe (2-of-5). Villanova owned a 46-32 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when the Wildcats travel to Washington, D.C., to take on the Georgetown Hoyas. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
