MILWAUKEE (AP) -Krystal Ellis scored eight of her 21 points down the stretch to help No. 16 Marquette hold off Villanova for a 76-70 victory Saturday night.

Christina Quaye added 14 and Jasmine McCullough 11, and Marquette (16-2, 4-1 Big East) bounced back from its 91-87 overtime loss at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night that snapped its school-record 14-game winning streak.

Stacie Witman scored 21 points and freshman reserve Maria Getty had 14 for Villanova (7-10, 1-3), which lost its second straight road game, having lost to Syracuse 62-51 Tuesday night. The Wildcats came in averaging 58.3 points, while Marquette was at 75.4.

Efueko Osagie-Landry scored 10 points in her first start of the season for Marquette. She replaced Erin Monfre.

It was Marquette's first win in three tries against Villanova. Marquette, which joined the Big East last season, lost to the Wildcats in the regular season and Big East Conference tournament last season.

Jackie Adamshick's jumper pulled Villanova to 64-62 with 2:14 left, but Ellis scored on a drive to push Marquette's lead to four. The Wildcats got no closer.

Villanova got back into game when it augmented the 3-pointers it used in the first half with drives down the lane.

Villanova's first 12 points during a 30-17 run to open the second half were from 3-point range, before a series of driving layups by Getty, Adamshick, who scored 12 points, and Witman fueled the comeback bid.

Adamshick's layup capped the surge and pulled Villanova within 53-52 with 8:03 to play.

Osagie-Landry sparked Marquette's game-opening 8-0 run with a free throw and a basket off a Villanova turnover. Her layup with 9:38 left in the first half gave Marquette a 22-8 lead, but the Wildcats, who missed nine of their first 10 shots, fought back.

Witman made two 3-pointers and Siobhan O'Connor hit one to pull the Wildcats within 22-17 with 7:56 left before the half. It was as close as they would get as Marquette scored 10 straight points to push the lead to 36-18.

Lisa Karcic scored on a layup with 14.6 seconds left in the first half, but was kneed in the head during a scramble for the ball on Marquette's next possession. The half ended as she lay on the court briefly before walking off.

Villanova was 5-of-15 from 3-point range in the first half and Marquette was 2-of-6.
