VILLANOVA, Pa. – In women’s basketball action on Tuesday evening, the Villanova Wildcats fell to the Butler Bulldogs by a score of 76-53. With the loss, Villanova falls to 11-2 overall and 1-2 in Big East play, while Butler improves to 9-5 on the year and 1-1 in conference action.

Villanova started fast and raced to an early 11-2 lead. Senior center Megan Quinn led the early charge with five points on a three-point field goal and a 10-foot jumper.

Butler responded and controlled play over the last five minutes of the opening quarter. The Bulldogs outscored Villanova, 14-3, over the final 4:37 to take a 16-14 advantage after one.

The Bulldogs led 31-24 with 1:47 remaining in the second quarter, when the Wildcats closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the Butler lead to 31-29 at halftime. The five points included two free throws by senior guard Alex Louin and a three-ball by junior forward Jannah Tucker.

With the score tied at 35-35 at the 7:56 mark of the third quarter, Butler used a 19-2 run to open up a 54-37 lead with 2:06 to go in the third stanza. Butler center Tori Schickel had eight points in the spurt, while sophomore guard Kristen Spolyar connected on two threes. The Bulldogs would use the run en route to a 58-40 lead after three.

Butler would control play in the fourth quarter and cruise to the win.

In the loss, Louin led the Wildcats with a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Tucker added 10 points. Quinn chipped in with nine points.

Butler was paced by Schickel who had 26 points, seven rebounds and six assists. She was 10-of-11 from the field. Whitney Jennings had 16 points and six rebounds, while Spolyar finished with 13 points.

For the game, Villanova shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-of-54), 14.8 percent from three-point range (4-of-27) and 70.0 percent from the foul line (7-of-10), while Butler was 28-of-53 from the floor (52.8%), 6-of-16 from long distance (37.5%) and 14-of-19 from the charity stripe (73.7%). Butler dominated the backboards by a 43-19 margin.

Villanova returns to action on Friday, Jan. 5, with a home game versus Xavier. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
