VILLANOVA, PA. - The men's soccer and football teams represented the Athletic Department on Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Diversity workshop presented by the Communications Department. Dr. Heidi Rose directed the Diversity Players in a series of scenes that represented campus life. Three Villanova student-athletes, Robin Flier (softball), Darrell Adams (football) and Brian Pilger (men's lacrosse), were part of the Diversity Players.
The scenarios started in a classroom, and then moved to stereotyping of various people. It included several different topics, including sexual orientation, race and gender. After the scenarios were completed, groups were formed of 10-14 people with a facilitor. The facilitator asked questions, and members of the group were encouraged to be open and honest when answering. Afterwards, the groups convened and talked as one big group, stating their opinions and views on the various controversial topics.
Quotes:
"The skits presented clearly identified how many if not all of this campus is denoted as. Not many people are aware that there is a problem with the diversity situation here and this seminar really helped and should be held more often." - Rodney Badger
"The different situations that occurred during the skits really portrayed what goes on, on Villanova's campus. I really got a good understanding of the different attitudes and feelings. One of the most surprising facts that I learned was all the stereotypes here."- Terrance Reaves
"The skit personified the prejudices and controversial situations in a realistic and shocking way. Whether or not you think you have prejudices, you should recognize there are many out there that affect the lives of many students."- JC Cooper
