VILLANOVA, Pa.--The site for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional will be a familiar one for Villanova, which will be in competition on the Lehigh campus on Friday afternoon. The men's cross country 10,000 meters race gets underway at Noon and will be followed by the women's race at 1:15 p.m. An awards ceremony following the second race takes place inside Goodman Stadium. The top two teams in each race earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships later this month.
Two weeks ago at the BIG EAST Championship the Wildcats men's team won the program's fifth BIG EAST title with a dominating performance. Villanova placed all five of its counting runners in the top 14 and registered the lowest winning score out of the five championships the Wildcats have won. Freshman Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) was the individual champion and led a group of six Villanova runners that earned All-BIG EAST honors.
So far this season the Wildcats have placed second at the Chile Pepper Festival in Arkansas and won the Princeton Invitational. Tiernan has been the team's top finisher in four straight races, while the trio of junior Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia) and sophomores Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) have also helped to form a deep core for Villanova.
On the women's side seniors Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) and Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) each earned All-BIG EAST honors for the third time in their careers at the conference meet. Lipari was the runner-up in the BIG EAST race with a personal best 6,000 meters time of 19:56, while Akande finished in 12th place and crossed the finish line in 20:47.
Lipari has been the top finisher for Villanova in every race she has run this season. Friday's meet will be the second of the season on the Lehigh Cross Country Course for the Wildcats, who competed in the Paul Short Run earlier in the year. Villanova also competed at the Pre-NCAA Meet last month after opening the season in September at the Friend Big Five Invitational and the Main Line Invitational.
