VILLANOVA, Pa.--Villanova is ready to run in the BIG EAST Men's Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, where the 8K conference championship race goes off at 11 a.m. Live video of the race can be accessed via the link at the top of this release.
To this point in the season the Wildcats have finished in fourth place at the Paul Short Run and 10th place out of 39 teams at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
At the top of the Villanova lineup seniors Keith Capecci (New Hope, Pa.) and Matthew Gibney (Albury, Australia) have stepped up and are running the best they have at any point during their careers. Capecci and Gibney were the top two finishers for the Wildcats at each of the two scored meets the team has entered this season.
Senior Brian Long (Louisville, Ky.) was the individual champion at the season-opening Main Line Invitational and had a strong performance at the Wisconsin meet two weeks ago. Long will be running in his hometown at the conference championships this weekend.
The lineup for Villanova is both experienced and very balanced. At the Wisconsin adidas Invitational just 26 seconds separated the team's top five runners. In addition to Capecci, Gibney and Long, Villanova will rely on contributions from senior Ryan Sheridan (Melville, N.Y.), juniors Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.) and Mathew Mildenhall (Auckland, New Zealand) as well as freshman Samuel McEntee (Perth, Australia).
"I truly believe that we have the talent to be very successful," Villanova head coach Marcus O'Sullivan said. "Hopefully our talent will shine this weekend."
