Oct. 3, 2013
VILLANOVA, Pa.--The first scored meet of the season is on tap for the men's cross country team on Saturday morning, as Villanova will compete at the 25th Annual Chile Pepper Festival in Arkansas. The meet is being held at Agri Park in Fayetteville and the collegiate 8K race begins at 9:45 a.m. Click on the link at the top of this release for live results of the race.
So far this season the Wildcats have run twice locally at the Friend Big Five Invitational and the Main Line Invitational. Villanova is currently ranked No. 27 in the nation and is one of two nationally-ranked teams that will run in the Chile Pepper meet. The other ranked squad is host Arkansas, which came in at No. 6 in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Poll (USTFCCCA).
In addition to the Wildcats and Razorbacks, the meet also includes five regionally-ranked teams and the 2012 individual national champion. A total of 45 collegiate teams are entered in the meet, including 20 Division I squads.
Earlier this week Villanova freshman Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) was named the BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week. Tiernan was the individual winner of the Main Line Invitational last week in just his second collegiate race. He led a group of seven Wildcats that finished in the top 12 overall in last week's four-mile race, which was held on the Alumni Course at Haverford College.
The Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival was created in 1992 to bring together three northwest Arkansas cross country races under a single umbrella. The festival is now one of the premier cross country events in the nation and hosts approximately 4,800 runners and over 5,000 spectators each year.
