NEW ORLEANS--In the cross country preseason polls released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) last week Villanova is ranked No. 16 in the nation and second in the Mid-Atlantic Region to begin the 2012 campaign. Last season the Wildcats finished 13th as a team at the NCAA Championships and the squad returns three of its top seven runners from a year ago.

Villanova is one of four BIG EAST teams ranked in the national top 30 and is coming off winning the team title at the conference championships last season. Returning to the Wildcats this season are sophomore Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia), senior Mathew Mildenhall (Auckland, New Zealand) and senior Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.). Each of the three ran in the top seven of the Villanova lineup throughout last season, including at the national championships meet.

The other BIG EAST teams ranked in the national poll are Syracuse (No. 12), Georgetown (14) and Notre Dame (25).

In the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings the Wildcats are second to Georgetown, while Princeton, Penn State and Navy round out the top five teams in the region.

Villanova opens the 2012 season on Thursday, September 20 at the Main Line Invitational. The four-mile men's course for the event is located on the Haverford College campus and the race begins at 5:30 p.m.
