HAVERFORD, Pa.--Sophomore Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia) came in second overall and was the top collegiate finisher in a field of 110 runners as Villanova opened the 2012 season by competing in the Main Line Invitational on the Haverford College Alumni Course early Thursday evening. McEntee led a Wildcats group of 14 athletes that ran the four-mile course.
Thursday evening's meet featured six local schools and several unattached runners, with many Villanova alumni in the latter group. McEntee crossed the finish line with a time of 19:13.50 and was nine seconds ahead of the next Wildcats runner.
Seniors Mathew Mildenhall (Auckland, New Zealand), Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) and Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.) all placed in the top 10 for Villanova and finished consecutively from fifth through seventh, respectively. Mildenhall recorded a time of 19:22.50, Tully finished in 19:28.30 and Kane came in with a time of 19:29.60.
Rounding out the top seven for the Wildcats in the first meet of the season were sophomore Brian Basili (South Orange, N.J.) and juniors Greg Morrin (Hockessin, Del.) and John Pickhaver (Drexel Hill, Pa.). Basili and Morrin were separated by just three-tenths of a second in 11th place (19:37.50) and 12th place (19:37.80), while Pickhaver finished 18th with a time of 19:57.10.
The local meet has served as the opening competition of the season for Villanova for the past several years and is a good chance for head coach Marcus O'Sullivan to evaluate where his runners are at this early in the season.
Next up for the Wildcats is the Paul Short Run next Friday (Sept. 28) at Lehigh. Members of the Villanova team will run in that meet in both the Men's Open race (10:10 a.m.) and the Collegiate Men's Gold race (11:00 a.m.).
