On Tiernan: After just one season of collegiate competition has solidified his standing among the top distance runners nationwide ... Was an All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track last season and demonstrated tremendous progress as a runner during the course of the year ... Indoor school record holder in the 5000 meters and is the second-fastest runner in the event outdoors in school history ... Has big things awaiting him during the coming year and will be a key component of the Wildcats efforts to continue making an impact on the national scene.
2014 Outdoor: First team All-American in the 5000 meters ... His time of 13:31.25 at the NCAA Championships shattered by six seconds the previous personal best he had run during the indoor season (the old mark of 13:37.73 is the indoor school record) ... The mark of 13:31.25 is also the third-fastest in school history outdoors and trails only Sydney Maree, who ran two faster races during his Villanova career ... Tiernan's time is the 12th fastest ever at the NCAA Championships meet and he is one of just four athletes in school history to record a top-eight finish outdoors in the 5000 meters ... Was an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships after finishing fourth in his heat and eighth overall in the national semifinals at the NCAA East Preliminary, where he posted a time of 14:14.57 ... Also was the BIG EAST individual champion with a winning time of 13:56.01 at the conference meet ... Won that race by a margin of more than 26 seconds ... Ran the third leg of the 4xMile relay at the Penn Relays and helped Villanova finish third in the relay wi9th a time of 16:19.98 ... Set a personal best time in the 1500 meters at the Larry Ellis Invitational, where he crossed the finish line in 3:46.27 and came in 12th in the Elite section of the race ... Anchored the distance medley relay squad at the Colonial Relays, where the Wildcats top DMR squad came in first with a time of 9:50.37.
2014 Indoor: Set the indoor school record in the 5000 meters during the season and went on to be both a first team All-American and a BIG EAST champion in the event ... Set a Villanova mark with a time of 13:37.73 at the Iowa State Classic to break the previous record of 13:38.3 set by Sydney Maree more than 30 years ago ... Came in second in the race at Iowa State after leading for the majority of the race against a senior from Wisconsin ... Placed seventh in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Championships with a time of 14:00.83 ... BIG EAST champion with a winning time of 14:04.26 at the conference meet ... Also came in second and earned All-BIG EAST honors in the 3000 meters with a runner-up time of 8:10.71 ... Opened the season at the Penn State National and set both a meet and facility record at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track by winning the Invitational section of the 3000 meters in 7:57.75.
2013 Cross Country: Made an immediate impact on the national level in his first taste of collegiate competition ... Earned All-America honors and was the Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year ... Individual champion at both the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region and the BIG EAST Championships ... First Villanova runner to win each of those titles since Bobby Curtis in 2007 ... Was the top finisher for the Wildcats at every scored meet during the season ... Finished in ninth place at the NCAA Championships with a time of 30:15.7 ... His finish is the highest for a Villanova runner since Curtis came in fourth in 2007 ... Won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional with a time of 29:37 and came in first at the BIG EAST Championships in 23:51 ... Led the Wildcats to the team title at the Princeton Invitational with a third place overall finish (23:50) ... Came in fourth at the Chile Pepper Festival in Arkansas (24:27.0) to help Villanova earn a runner-up finish behind the host Razorbacks ... Individual winner at the four-mile Main Line Invitational (19:09.48), a performance which earned him BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors ... Made his collegiate debut at the Friend Big Five Invitational and came in ninth on the 6,000 meter course with a time of 18:56.46.
St. Joseph's College: Racing for the U20 Australian team was a triple champion in 2012 in the 1500 meters (3:50.67), 5000 meters (14:40.59) and cross country ... Previously was the 2011 Australian Junior (U18) cross country champion ... Winner of the Southern Cross University 10K road race with a time of 30:34.
