Men's Track & Field Welcomes Incoming Class as New Academic Year Gets Underway

VILLANOVA, Pa. - A new academic year at Villanova marked the official arrivals to campus of a talented group of newcomers to the men's track & field program. With his latest recruiting class, Wildcats head coach Marcus O'Sullivan has addressed several team needs while once again attracting some of the nation's top talent to continue the Wildcats legacy of success both academically and in athletic competition.

Four of the team's freshmen will compete in the sprints, including Amir Brock (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.), Brian Faust (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Keegan Hughes (Malvern, Pa.) and Tory Young (Baltimore, Md.). Three additional newcomers -- Jacob Kelly (Longmeadow, Mass.), Ryan Tompkins (Farmingdale, N.J.) and Michael Troup (Doylestown, Pa.) -- will be a part of Villanova's jumps group.

Freshman Alex Telma (St. Louis, Mo.) will compete in the throws, while graduate student Zack McDermott (Little Silver, N.J.) is a transfer from Monmouth who competes in the multi events and has one year of remaining collegiate eligibility.

In choosing to come to Villanova, the group of 10 newcomers are joining one of the nation's top track & field programs. The men's cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field teams have combined to win eight national championships while producing 72 individual NCAA champions and 442 All-Americans over the years. The Wildcats have won 95 Penn Relays titles, captured 19 BIG EAST team championships and produced 265 individual conference champions.



Below is an in-depth look at each of the Villanova newcomers.


Amir Brock (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J. / Egg Harbor Township High School)
School record holder in the 400 meters with a time of 47.55 ... Outdoor sectional champion in both the 200 meters and the 400 meters as a senior ... Placed fifth in the 400 meters at the Meet of Champions as a senior and anchored the 4x400 meter relay squad to a first place finish indoors as a junior ... Cape Atlantic League champion in the 200 meters as both a junior and a senior ... All-South Jersey honoree in the 4x400 meter relay and the multi events.

Brian Faust (Stone Mountain, Ga. / Marist School)
Was the 4A state champion in both the 400 meters and the 800 meters as a senior, and was the high point scorer at the state meet with 22.5 total points ... School record holder in the 400 meters (47.16).

Keegan Hughes (Malvern, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan)
All-American, all-state, all-district, and all-league performer ... Holds 12 school records.

Tory Young (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School)
Won a Penn Relays title in the 4x400 meter relay in the Small Private Schools section ... Two-time All-Metro athlete as a junior and a senior ... Was an all-conference performer all for years of high school ... Had personal best times in the 400 meters of 47.4 (relay split) and 48.2 (open race).


Jacob Kelly (Longmeadow, Mass. / Longmeadow High School)
School record holder in the high jump with a height of 2.01 meters ... Western/Central Massachusetts Division 1 champion in the high jump as a senior, and went on to finish third in New England ... Two-time Western Massachusetts high jump champion ... Two-time Western Massachusetts first team performer and was a Super 7 selection by Masslive as a senior.

Ryan Tompkins (Farmingdale, N.J. / Colts Neck)
School record holder in the high jump with a height of 2.03 meters ... New Jersey indoor state champion in the high jump as both a junior and a senior ... Also the Central Jersey, Monmouth County and Shore Conference high jump champion indoors and outdoors as a senior.

Michael Troup (Doylestown, Pa. / Lawrenceville School)
Competed for the track & field teams all four years and also played football his first two seasons ... Personal bests are 11.24 in the 100 meters, 22.49 in the 200 meters, 1.93 meters in the high jump, 7.11 meters in the long jump and 13.46 meters in the triple jump.


Alex Telma (St. Louis, Mo. / Priory School)
Two-time sectional winner and state qualifier in the discus ... Two-time sectional qualifier in the javelin ... Owns personal best marks of 5.93 meters in the long jump, 13.92 meters in the shot put, 33.60 meters in the javelin and 41.61 meters in the discus ... Also was a district qualifier in wrestling.


Zack McDermott (Little Silver, N.J. / Christian Brothers Academy / Monmouth)
Graduated from Monmouth as a double major in Finance and Accounting, with a minor in statistics ... School record holder in the heptathlon with 4,638 points ... Recorded three of the top five marks in the heptathlon in school history ... As a scholastic athlete was a three-time All-American at the New Balance Nationals indoor meet and was the 2013 Shore Conference Athlete of the Year ... Was his school's record holder in three individual events and two relays at the time of his graduation.
