VILLANOVA, Pa.--An incredible outdoor season to date for Villanova will culminate this week at the NCAA Championships, which take place from Wednesday through Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. A total of four Wildcats qualified for the national meet with their results at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville a week ago. Senior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) is a national qualifier in the 800 meters of the third straight year, while three other Villanova athletes are making their first career appearances at the national outdoor meet. Junior Elbert Maxwell (Dresher, Pa.) competes in the long jump, while sophomore Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) and freshman Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) will run in the 1500 meters and the 5000 meters, respectively.
Live coverage of this week's NCAA Championships is available on ESPN3 and ESPNU throughout the week. The events on Wednesday and Thursday evenings will stream live on ESPN3, while ESPNU will air a live telecast on Friday and Saturday as the national championships conclude. Villanova has a long history of success at the NCAA Championships and over the years has produced 34 national champions and a total of 127 All-Americans during the outdoor season. Entering this year's meet the Wildcats have produced at least one first team All-American in three straight seasons and six of the last seven years. Villanova has had at least one individual score points at the NCAA meet 53 times, dating back to 1947.
This week's action gets underway when Ellison runs in the national semifinals of the 800 meters on Wednesday evening (7:30 p.m. Eastern time/4:30 p.m. Pacific time). On Thursday evening Maxwell will compete in the long jump and Williamsz will run in the semifinal heats of the 1500 meters. Both of those events also get underway at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. Was seventh overall in the quarterfinal round ... Finished 10th overall in the national first round with a time of 1:48.67 and was second in his heat to automatically move on to the quarterfinals.
NCAA Championships: Making his first career appearance at the outdoor national meet ... Qualifier in the long jump after recording a personal best mark of 7.52 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary ... Ranked 23rd among the qualifiers for the long jump at the national meet.
NCAA East Preliminary: Came in 11th overall in the long jump with a personal best mark of 7.52 meters ... That came on his second jump in the first round of the long jump and was the top mark recorded in either of the first two flights (out of four) during the first round ... Qualified for the finals and wound up finishing 11th to secure a spot at the NCAA meet.
NCAA Championships: Making his first career appearance at the outdoor national meet ... Ranked 21st among the qualifiers in the 5000 meters ... Top time of the season is 13:56.01 from the BIG EAST Championships ... His top collegiate mark of 13:37.73 came during the indoor season and is an indoor school record.
NCAA East Preliminary: In the national semifinals of the 5000 meters came in fourth in his heat to automatically advance to the NCAA Championships ... Recorded a time of 14:14.57 and was eighth overall among the 43 competitors from two heats.
NCAA Championships: Making his first career appearance at the outdoor national meet ... Ranked 21st among the qualifiers in the 1500 meters ... Top time of the season is 3:43.01 from the Larry Ellis Invitational ... Lifetime best in the 1500 meters is 3:36.74 from high school in Australia.
NCAA East Preliminary: Automatic qualifier in each of the first two rounds of the 1500 meters ... Came in second in his national quarterfinal heat and ranked fourth overall in the quarterfinals with a time of 3:45.90 ... Came in third in his national first round heat and was 11th overall in the first round with a time of 3:49.31.
