Seven Wildcats Qualify for Big East Championship at Widener Invitational
April 25, 2005 CHESTER, Pa. - At the Widener Invitational this past weekend, seven members of the Villanova men's track & field team qualified for next month's Big East Championship. Several members of the team competed in the local meet, and the squad now has a total of 18 individuals who have qualified for the conference meet in 15 different events.
Leading the way at Widener was the trio of senior Ryan Hayden (Richmond, Canada) and sophomores Mark Korich (Wyndmoor, Pa.) and Michael Kerrigan (Stroudsburg, Pa.) each qualified for the Big East meet in the 800 meters. Hayden paced 78 runners in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.51, while Korich was less than a second behind in 1:53.41. Kerrigan crossed in 1:53.45.
Freshman John Wilsman and junior Carl Hansen (Glen Mills, Pa.) each qualified in the 400 meter dash. Wilsman crossed 48.59 to finish third out of 52 runners, while Hansen's time of 48.79 placed him fourth. Freshman Patrick Gazzini ran the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 54.94 to qualify for the conference meet, while sophomore Marc Pelerin (Marlton, N.J.) posted a qualifying time of 3:53.21 in the 1500 meters.
The 2005 Outdoor Big East Championship will be held from May 6-8 in Piscataway, N.J. Complete results for all Villanova athletes at the Widener Invitational appear below.
