PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Senior distance runner Ryan Sheridan (Melville, N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Last weekend Sheridan won the 5000 meters at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational and established a new personal best time in the process.
Sheridan raced in the championship section of the 5000 meters at the New Balance meet and finished first out of 10 runners with a time of 13:56.43. This is the leading time in the BIG EAST this season and ranked sixth in the entire nation through the end of the weekend. Sheridan has run two races in the 5000 meters to this point in the indoor season and also won the event at the Great Dane Classic last month.
The success Sheridan is having indoors continues where he left off at the end of the cross country season in the fall. He was the top runner for Villanova at the NCAA Championships and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and earned All-Mid Atlantic Region honors for a runner-up finish at the regional meet. Sheridan also received All-BIG EAST mention after placing eighth at the conference championships and helping the Wildcats win their first title since 2002 and the fourth in program history.
Sheridan is in his first full season at Villanova following four years at Iona, where he was an All-American in both cross country and outdoors in the 5000 meters. Upon his graduation from Iona he had eligibility remaining in all three seasons (cross country, indoor track, outdoor track) and enrolled at Villanova for the Spring 2011 semester.
This weekend the Wildcats will be in action at the Millrose Games Collegiate Invitational at the New York Armory.
