GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) is headed to the finals site of the NCAA Championships for the second straight year after finishing third in his heat of the national quarterfinals in the 800 meters at Aggie Stadium on Friday night. In competition at the NCAA East Regional, Ellison recorded a time of 1:49.82 and automatically qualified for at least the national semifinals in Eugene, Ore. next month. Ellison was a first team All-American in the 800 meters last season.

In his race tonight Ellison finished third out of eight runners in his heat and ranked eighth overall out of the 24 qualifiers for the quarterfinal round. His heat featured the tightest finish and the first three runners across the finish line were separated by less than three-tenths of a second. Ellison came in behind Eliud Rutto of Middle Tennessee State (1:49.55) and Kisean Smith of Georgia (1:49.80) by the smallest of margins.

Sophomore Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also ran in the quarterfinals of the 800 meters and he came in seventh in the second heat with a time of 1:49.46. At the end of the quarterfinal round Solis ranked 13th in the overall standings and he had the fastest time out of the runners that did not qualify for the next round. He competed in the fastest of the three heats and finished off what has been an excellent year of competition.

Solis registered a fifth place finish in the 800 meters at the BIG EAST Championships and led off the Wildcats runner-up 4x800 meter relay squad at the Penn Relays last month. During the indoor season he earned All-BIG EAST as part of the team's 4x800 unit and also individually in the 1000 meters.

The final day of competition at the NCAA East Regional is on Saturday, when Villanova has three runners competing in the quarterfinals of the 1500 meters. That competition begins at 6:45 p.m. and the Wildcats will be represented by sophomores Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia), as well as freshman Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia). Each of the three qualified automatically for the quarterfinals based on their finishes in the national first round last night.
