JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--The trio of freshman Samuel McEntee (Perth, Australia), sophomore Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) and junior Nicoy Hines (Paterson, N.J.) each advanced automatically to the quarterfinals of their respective events on the first day of competition in the NCAA East Regional at Hodges Stadium. McEntee ran in the first round of the 1500 meters, Ellison competed in the 800 meters and Hines was running in the 400 meter hurdles.
McEntee won his heat in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:46.37, good for fifth place overall in the field of 48 runners that made up the first round. In a tactical race he hung near the back of the pack through the first 700 meters before kicking into gear. McEntee was in 12th place in his heat with two laps to go but had moved into the lead entering the ball lap. He never relinquished the lead and comfortably qualified for the quarterfinals on Saturday night.
Fifth-year senior Brian Tetreault (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and true freshman Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) each ran in the 1500 meters as well. Tetreault placed ninth in his heat with a time of 3:49.77 and came in 25th overall in the field. He made a strong surge over the final 300 meters in his heat and narrowly missed out on advancing on time to the quarterfinal heats. Denault registered a time of 4:07.99 in the first heat and came in 11th in his heat.
In the first round of the 800 meters Ellison won his heat with a time of 1:49.65. He ran in the top two of his heat for the entire race and looked strong after one lap around the track. He moved into the lead shortly after and held on at the finish line with a time that ended up being the 10th fastest overall in the field heading into the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) finished sixth in the first heat of the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.90. Entering the final heat of the 800 meters he had the bubble time to advance on time to the quarterfinals and wound up narrowly missing the cut.
The first running event of the day was the 400 meter hurdles and Hines recorded a time of 52.04 in the sixth and final heat. He came in third in his heat to earn his automatic qualification for the quarterfinals. Hines was ranked 20th in the field of 44 runners going into tomorrow night's quarterfinals.
Freshman jumper Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) competed on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the long jump and registered a distance of 6.95 meters. He finished 37th out of 48 competitors in the event. COMPLETE VILLANOVA RESULTS FROM THURSDAY
