GREENSBORO, N.C. - All five Villanova runners that competed in the national first round of the 1500 meters and the 800 meters on Thursday night moved on to the quarterfinals during a strong first day of competition for the Wildcats in the NCAA East Regional at Aggie Stadium on Thursday night. Villanova has three runners advancing in the 1500 meters and two moving on to the quarterfinals in the 800 meters based on first round results.

In the 1500 meters sophomores Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia) and Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.), in addition to freshman Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) are each automatic qualifiers for the finals on Saturday night. McEntee had the second fastest time overall out of 48 competitors in the first round and he won his heat with a time of 3:47.37. McEntee was a second team All-American in the 1500 meters last season.

All three Wildcats ranked in the top 10 overall of the 1500 meters. Williamsz ran in the third of four heats and came in second in his heat with a time of 3:47.75, while Denault was the runner-up in the first heat and crossed the finish line in 3:49.91. They ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, in the full field.

Junior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) and sophomore Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each moved on to the quarterfinals in the 800 meters. Ellison was an automatic qualifier from the third of six first round heats by virtue of a runner-up finish in his heat. He registered a time of 1:49.33 and will look to earn a second straight berth to the NCAA Championships site in the quarterfinals tomorrow night. Ellison was a first team All-American in the 800 meters last year and defended his BIG EAST title earlier this month.

Solis recorded a time of 1:50.33 in his first round race and came in sixth in the first heat. Following the race it was ruled that Solis had been obstructed as he came down the final straightaway in his race and he therefore advanced on time to the quarterfinals.

Senior Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.) was also in action for Villanova on Thursday evening. He competed in the national semifinals of the 10000 meters and registered a time of 30:53.67, which placed him 39th out of 48 runners.

The quarterfinals of the 800 meters will be held at 7:15 p.m. on Friday night, while the quarterfinals of the 1500 meters are slated for Saturday evening at 6:45 p.m.
