May 12, 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--Sophomore middle distance runner Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) ran his top collegiate time in the 800 meters at the Virginia Challenge on Saturday afternoon, crossing the finish line in 1:48.91 at Lannigan Field to put himself in excellent position to qualify for the NCAA East Regional next week.
Fitzsimons ran the 16th fastest time in the East region for the current outdoor season and came within less than a tenth of a second of establishing a personal best time. He came in fourth out of 21 runners in the race and was less than half a second off the winning pace.
Two weeks ago Fitzsimons ran a strong leg of the 4x800 meter relay for Villanova at the Penn Relays and he went on to earn All-BIG EAST honors with a runner-up finish to teammate and fellow Wildcats sophomore Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) at the BIG EAST Championships. Ellison is currently ranked 21st in the East in the 800 meters.
Fifth-year senior Brian Tetreault (Cinnamminson, N.J.) ran the 1500 meters at the Virginia Challenge and registered his best time of the season at 3:45.25. This ranks 44th in the East for the outdoor season and should enable Tetreault to qualify for the NCAA regional meet. Tetreault finished 17th out of 39 runners in the 1500 meters and sophomore Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) came in 25th with a new personal best time of 3:48.03.
