CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) highlighted six Villanova distance runners who were in competition on Saturday evening at the Virginia Challenge, as he won the non-invitational section of the 800 meters at Lannigan Field. Also recording a strong performance for the Wildcats was sophomore Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.), who registered a personal best time of 3:42.08 in the 1500 meters.
Solis ran in the first of three heats in the 800 meters and crossed the finish line just five-hundredths of a second in front of Aaron Ramirez from Clemson, who was the runner-up in the heat in 1:50.99. Those two times remained as the top marks after all three heats had been run. Senior Andrew Golato (Springfield, Pa.) came in fourth in the final heat and ranked 22nd overall with a time of 1:54.98.
Villanova had three runners in the 1500 meters and Denault raced to a time of 3:42.08, lowering his personal best in the event by just under two-tenths of a second. He finished in second place out of 61 entries in the 1500 meters and was also the runner-up in his individual heat. Matthew Elliot from the Brooks club came in first with a time of 3:41.91 but Denault was the top finisher among affiliated collegiate runners in the race.
Junior Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) and senior Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) came in 40th and 52nd, respectively, in the 1500 meters. O'Sullivan posted a time of 3:53.36 and finished in eighth place in the last of four heats of the event, while Tully had a time of 3:57.89 and placed 11th in the third heat.
