Wildcats Advance Five to Finals at BIG EAST Championships
May 4, 2013
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) had the top time in the preliminaries of the 800 meters and freshman Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) similarly led the field in the 1500 meters as Villanova advanced a total of five runners from two events to the finals during competition in the BIG EAST Championships at the Rutgers Track & Field Complex on Saturday afternoon. All five of the runners who advanced to the finals in the 800 meters and the 1500 meters were automatic qualifiers based on their finishes in Saturday's heats.
Ellison and sophomore Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each ran in the first of three preliminary heats in the 800 meters. They recorded identical times of 1:50.92 to occupy the two spots out of seven competitors in the heat. The top two finishers in each heat and the next two fastest times advance to the finals tomorrow afternoon. Both of the "on-time" qualifiers came from the same heat that Ellison and Solis ran in. Senior Andrew Golato (Springfield, Pa.) came in 12th overall with a time of 1:53.94.
In the preliminaries of the 1500 meters, Williamsz won his heat with a time of 3:53.57, coming in less than a tenth of a second ahead of sophomore teammate Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and the rest of the 14 runners that made up the field for the second of two heats. Denault crossed the finish line with a time of 3:53.65 and finished second. The top three runners in the heat, which also included Ryan Urie of Syracuse, were separated by only 0.12 seconds at the finish line.
Senior Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) came in third in the first preliminary heat with a time of 4:00.04 and is also in the field of 12 for the finals on Sunday afternoon. He was less than four-tenths of a second off the winning pace in his heat and he ranks sixth overall heading into the finals. Junior Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) came in 23rd overall in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:05.41.
In addition to the preliminary events on Saturday the Wildcats also had runners competing in the 10000 meters and the 3000 meter steeplechase. Senior Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.) notched a 12th place finish in the 10000 with a time of 30:30.05 and senior John Pickhaver (Drexel Hill, Pa.) came in with a 20th place finish and a time of 31:25.81.
Junior Greg Morrin (Hockessin, Del.) ran in the 3000 meter steeplechase and came in 11th with a time of 9:26.41. This is the first time that he has competed in the steeplechase at the conference meet.
Villanova also competed in the preliminary heats of the 400 meters and the 400 meter hurdles on Saturday afternoon. Freshmen Alex Reber (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Donald Urschel (East Brunswick, N.J.) came in 17th and 23rd, respectively, in the 400 meters with times of 48.81 and 50.71. Reber's time was a season best and one-hundredth of a second faster than what he ran at the Haverford Tri-Meet last month.
In the preliminaries of the 400 meter hurdles freshman Joseph Messick (Mongtomery, N.J.) recorded a time of 55.98 and came in 12th overall. He crossed the finish line in under 56 seconds for the second time in six races this season.
In addition to individual competition tomorrow the Wildcats will also run in the 4x400 meter relay and the 4x800 relay on the final day of the BIG EAST meet.
