Wildcats Win Five Events at Widener Invitational

CHESTER, Pa.--A successful day of competition for Villanova included wins in three running events and two field events in the Widener Invitational at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Bryan Murphy (Teaneck, N.J.), junior Nicoy Hines (Paterson, N.J.) and sophomore Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) each won running events while freshmen Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Matthew Sidney (Canton, Mass.) captured the long jump and the high jump, respectively.
In all the Wildcats entered athletes in nine events as they tune up for the Penn Relays next week and the BIG EAST Championships and other postseason meets next month. Murphy made an impression with his best run of the season in the 400 meters, which he won with a personal best time of 48.30 to pace 33 entries in the event.
Hines opened up his outdoor season with a near personal best in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing first out of 21 competitors with a time of 51.75. He was just over a tenth of a second off his fastest career time in the event.
In the 1500 meters Fitzsimons led a group of five Villanova runners who were a part of a field of 84 competitors. Redshirt freshman Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) came in ninth with a time of 3:57.81, classmate Chris Pietrocarlo (Hampstead, N.H.) was 12th (3:58.99) and junior John Castillo (Mount Laurel, N.J.) finished 14th (3:59.76), while freshman Charlie Bates (Hoboken, N.J.) rounded out the group in 17th place (4:00.33).
Junior Philip O'Connell (Rye, N.Y.) tallied an eighth place finish out of 65 runners in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.20.
Three athletes competed in the 3000 meter steeplechase and junior Greg Morrin (Hockessin, Del.) was the runner-up out of 21 entries with a time of 9:38.18. Redshirt freshman Dan Harris (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and classmate Richie Bohny (South Orange, N.J.) came in 10th (10:08.18) and 17th (10:47.52), respectively.
Maxwell led a number of strong performances for the Wildcats in the field events and won the long jump with a distance of 7.22 meters, his second-best mark of the outdoor season. Junior Lazaro Tiant (Roselle, N.J.) was fourth in the long jump (6.46m) and Sidney won the high jump with a height of 1.95 meters.
In the throwing events senior Frank Anuszewski (Pottstown, Pa.) came in third in the hammer (50.05m) and eighth in the javelin (48.26m) while competing in the latter event for the first time this season. Sophomore Drew King (New Haven, Conn.) took eighth place in the hammer (42.59m), senior Billy Berrigan (Vista, Calif.) was 10th (41.34m) and junior Chris McLeod (Islip, N.Y.) finished 12th (38.40m).
Freshman Chris Glennie (Fallsington, Pa.) led Villanova with a seventh place finish in the javelin (49.02m), while freshmen Connor Milanaik and Ryan Milanaik came in 11th and 12th, respectively. Their distances were 46.72 meters and 45.24 meters.
