CHESTER, Pa. - Sophomore Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and junior Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) were the winners of the 1500 meters and the 800 meters, respectively, as Villanova finished up competition at the Widener Invitational at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Overall the Wildcats competed in seven different events on the final day of the local meet.
Denault led a contingent of seven Villanova runners that competed in the 1500 meters. He crossed the finish line in 3:46.39 and had a margin of victory over nearly three seconds over senior teammate Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) and the rest of the field of 97 runners. Tully was the runner-up in 3:49.06 and four more Wildcats finished between ninth and 13th in the race.
Junior Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.), senior Greg Morrin (Hockessin, Del.) and sophomore Robert Hurlbut (Rochester, N.Y.) all set personal bests with their times in the 1500 meters. O'Sullivan recorded a ninth place finish (3:52.30), Morrin placed 11th (3:56.89) and Hurlbut finished in 12th place (3:57.15). Junior Dan Harris (Clifton Park, N.Y.) came in 13th (3:58.38) and junior Richie Bohny (Holmdel, N.J.) took 32nd place with a time of 4:07.66.
FitzSimons won the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.58 and had a margin of victory of more than one second. Senior Andrew Golato (Springfield, Pa.) came in third in 1:52.39.
Villanova notched third place finishes in the 110 meter hurdles, the 400 meter hurdles and the 400 meters. Freshman Aaron Sandifer (Harrisburg, N.C.) came in third out of 15 in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.81, while classmate Joseph Messick (Montgomery, N.J.) produced a time of 56.10 in the 400 meter hurdles. Sophomore Cory Serfoss (Easton, Pa.) placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 50.09.
In the field events sophomore Chris Glennie (Fallsington, Pa.) came in fourth out of 25 competitors in the javelin with a throw of 53.75 meters. Sophomores Connor Milanaik and Ryan Milanaik finished ninth and 14th, respectively. Connor recorded a distance of 51.08 meters and Ryan set a personal best mark with a throw of 46.23 meters.
Rounding out competition for the Wildcats were three athletes in the hammer. Senior Chris McLeod (Islip, N.Y.) was eighth in the field of 22 entries with a personal best mark of 42.98 meters. Freshman James Rowen (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) threw the hammer for the first time and had a mark of 36.75 meters in a 12th place finish, while junior Drew King (New Haven, Conn.) came in 14th (36.08 meters).
NOTES: Sophomore Charlie Bates (Hoboken, N.J.) competed as an unattached runner in the 1500 meters and came in 30th with a time of 4:06.55 ... Freshmen Josh Lampron (Mansfield, Mass.) and Kieran Brennan (Pearl River, N.Y.) also ran unattached and they came in second and ninth ... Lampron had a personal time of 1:51.66 and Brennan came in ninth with a time of 1:55.58.
