CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Sophomore Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) headlined a strong Villanova effort at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational at Cobb Stadium on Saturday, where the Wildcats had athletes competing in four different events. Ellison and sophomore Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) finished first and second, respectively, in the 800 meters.
Ellison recorded a personal best time of 1:49.04 in the 800 meters and crossed the finish line first out of 29 runners. It was the second time during the calendar year that he lowered his personal best in the event, as he had previously run a time of 1:49.35 at the Penn State National during the indoor season. Fitzsimons registered a season-best time of 1:51.07 in finishing as the runner-up to Ellison.
In the sprints freshman Bryan Murphy (Teaneck, N.J.) finished eighth out of 36 in the 400 meters with his best time of the season. He crossed the finish line with a time of 48.90.
Freshman Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led Villanova with two strong efforts in the jumps. He cleared a height of 2.10 meters in the high jump, establishing a new personal best and also coming in third out of eight competitors. Maxwell also placed seventh out of 18 in the long jump with a distance of 7.00 meters.
Maxwell was joined in the long jump by junior Lazaro Tiant (Roselle, N.J.), who finished 10th with a jump of 6.59 meters. In the high jump freshman Matthew Sidney (Canton, Mass.) placed seventh with a height of 1.95 meters.
