CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Junior Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Joseph Messick (Montgomery, N.J.) recorded personal best times in the 800 meters and the 400 meter hurdles, respectively, as Villanova had a great day of competition in the Hurricane Alumni Invitational at Cobb Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) and Solis combined for a one-two finish in the 800 meters. Ellison paced the field of 25 runners with a time of 1:49.29, while Solis came in second in 1:50.03. That time eclipsed his previous top mark - set at Princeton last season - by more than two full seconds.
In the 400 meter hurdles Messick was the runner-up out of seven entries and crossed the finish line in 55.09. His previous top time of 56.28 was set just last week at the Colonial Relays and in Saturday's race Messick lowered the mark by more than a second.
The Wildcats had a group of three runners in the 400 meters and they all finished within a half second of each other. Freshman Donald Urschel (East Brunswick, N.J.) led the way with a fifth place finish out of 26 competitors. He crossed the finish line in 48.83 and was followed by freshman Alex Reber (Cherry Hill, N.J.) in sixth place (49.19) and graduate student Kyle Chou (Wilmington, Del.) in ninth place (49.35).
In addition to the individual results the Villanova sprinters also combined for a victory in the 4x400 meter relay. The Wildcats came in first out of eight relay squads with a time of 3:12.03.
Sophomore Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) competed in both the long jump and the high jump, finishing third (6.99 meters) and fourth (1.98 meters) in those events, respectively.
Villanova will be in competition next weekend at the Widener Invitational.
