Wildcats Finish in Sixth Place at Colonial Relays

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - In two days of competition this weekend at the Colonial Relays strong performances by Villanova in the distance medley relay and the 4x400 meter relay helped the Wildcats score 42 points in the team standings and finish in sixth place out of 27 teams.
Villanova finished in third place out of 19 teams in the 4x400 meter relay as a lineup of freshman Bryan Murphy (Teaneck, N.J.), junior Carlton Bowers (Springfield, N.J.), sophomore Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) registered a time of 3:13.64.
Bowers and Murphy also ran individually in the 400 meters and placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Bowers crossed the finish line in 49.54 and Murphy registered a time of 49.57. Fitzsimons raced in the 800 meters and came in sixth out of 78 entries with a time of 1:52.49.
In the distance medley relay the Wildcats finished fourth with a time of 10:01.18. Sophomore Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) led off the relay and was followed by senior Joseph Capecci (Newtown, Pa.), sophomore Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Joseph LoRusso (Oak Hill, Va.).
LoRusso anchored the DMR and also placed 10th individually in the 1500 meters, which he finished in 3:52.30. Solis (3:55.71) and O'Sullivan (3:56.35) placed 20th and 22nd, respectively, in the field of 81 competitors in the 1500 meters. Capecci ran in the 800 meters and posted a time of 1:56.13.
There were also several noteworthy performances in the field events. Freshman jumper Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched the highest individual finish of the weekend for Villanova with a third-place finish in the championship section of the long jump. Maxwell tallied a mark of 7.24 meters and also finished fifth in the championship section of the high jump by clearing a height of 2.01 meters.
Among the other top finishes for the Wildcats were sixth place finishes by senior thrower Frank Anuszewski (Pottstown, Pa.) in the hammer throw (48.37m), freshman Matthew Sidney (Canton, Mass.) in the high jump (2.01m) and freshman Chris Glennie (Fallsington, Pa.) in the javelin (54.53m).
