Men's Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Home

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The men's track and field squad opened the 2010 outdoor season on a sunny, but chilly afternoon at home on Jumbo Elliot Track. It was a successful opening for the Wildcats as they turned in ten BIG EAST qualifying performances in front of the home crowd.
Matthew Wikler led off the track events finishing second in the 1,500m run in a conference qualifying time of 3:54.14. His time was good enough for second place. Keith Cappeci narrowly missed on a conference mark, but was third finishing in 3:57.20.
Chris Kearney won the 400m dash clocking in at 48.64 second to qualify to the BIG EAST Championships.
In the 400m hurdles, Stefan Goodridge and Nicoy Hines recorded conference qualifying marks. Goodridge was second in the event finishing in 54.02 seconds, while Hines earned fourth place in 55.08 seconds.
Michael Lynch squeaked in a BIG EAST mark in the 200m dash as he ran 22.26 and was in second place.
The Wildcats were loaded in the 5,000m run as Brian Long, Matthew Kane and Hugo Beamish took the top three spots, respectively. Long clocked in at 14:29.39, while Kane finished in 14:33.94 and Beamish ran 14:36.52. All three times were BIG EAST qualifiers. Also earning a conference time was Bobby Papazian who ran 14:45.01 and earned fifth place.
Curran Darling matched a conference qualifying height in the high jump clearing 1.98 meters.
Villanova will compete next weekend in the Colonial Relays at William & Mary University and at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational on Penn's campus.
