Men's Distance Medley Relay Squad Jumps to Third in Nation
Jordy Williamsz anchored the Wildcats to the nation's third-leading time in the DMR on Sunday afternoon.

March 2, 2014

BOSTON, Mass. - On the final day to post times that can be considered for selection to the national championships Villanova posted a time of 9:28.06 in the distance medley relay and leaped to third in the nation on the season performance list. The lineup of junior Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.), senior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.), senior Chris FitzSimons (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) competed in the Boston University Last Chance Meet at the Track & Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon and the Wildcats also had individual entries in the Mile and the 800 meters. Sophomore Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) posted a time of 3:59.52 in the Mile to notch the third sub-four minute time of his career and the second this season.

In addition to moving up on the national performance list Villanova also posted one of the best DMR times in school history. The indoor school record of 9:27.37 was set on March 7, 2002 and since that race the Wildcats had not broken the 9:30 mark in an indoor race. Villanova now has a time that is less than 1.5 seconds behind the nation's leading time this season (Penn State, 9:26.59).

The lineup for the Wildcats was a familiar one, as Ellison, FitzSimons and Williamsz occupied the final three legs of the DMR at the Penn Relays during the last outdoor season, where they posted a time of 9:26.80 to tally a runner-up finish.

Solis was the leadoff runner this time around and he ran his 1200 meters in 2:52.3 before handing the baton off to Ellison, who then produced a 46.1 split over 400 meters. FitzSimons (1:49.8) and Williamsz (3:59.8) ran the final two legs to lead Villanova to the victory.

Denault recorded a personal best time of 3:59.52 in the Mile and came in second out of 26 runners. He also went under four minutes earlier this season at the Iowa State Classic, where he posted a time of 3:59.86. Denault is one of 36 Villanovans who have run a sub-four minute Mile during their careers and he is the first in just over a decade to accomplish the feat three times as an active member of the Wildcats roster.

Graduate student Michael Palmisano (Dresher, Pa.) and freshman Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) ran in the 800 meters and finished fourth (1:51.00) and 18th (1:54.84), respectively.

Declarations and selections for the national championships will be made this Tuesday (March 4).
