SYRACUSE, N.Y.--On the first day of competition at the Big East Championships, the Wildcats distance medley relay team qualified for the IC4A Championship, placing second out of nine teams with a time of 10:00.31. Villanova entered the meet as the defending conference champions in the event, and finished just 0.14 seconds behind the winning quartet from Notre Dame. Overall, five events have been scored at the meet, and the Wildcats stand in fifth place with 11 points. Notre Dame is the current leader with 57.50 points, followed by Rutgers (37.50), Pittsburgh (35) and Georgetown (32) ahead of Villanova.

The Wildcats had participants in three individual events that have been completed. Sophomore Robert McDade (Broomall, Pa.) was sixth out of nine competitors in the 35-pound weight throw, with a distance of 16.42 meters. Junior Milos Mitric (Zivke Micial, Yugoslavia) led three Villanova runners in the 5000 meters, and placed 10th out of 15 with a time of 14:57.47. Junior Craig Segal (xx) and sophomore Michael Kerrigan (xx) came in 13th and 14th, respectively. Also, freshman Tim Murphy (xx) was 12th in the heptathlon with 2146 points.

In preliminary events, nine Villanova athletes qualified for the finals of their respective events. Senior Ryan Hayden (xx) and freshman Kyle Audi (Loudonville, N.Y.) placed fourth and eighth in the 1000 meters. Both posted IC4A qualifying times and will compete in the finals on Sunday.
