NEW YORK -- Junior middle distance runner Sean Tully (Syosset, N.Y.) posted a winning time of 2:23.22 in the 1000 meter run to establish a new meet record at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday afternoon at the New York Armory. Tully placed first out of 52 runners in the event and broke the previous meet record of 2:24.35 by more than one second.

"It was a great race for Sean and I am very happy for him that he was able to not only win the race but set a new meet record," Villanova head coach Marcus O'Sullivan said. "Sean is having an outstanding season and this is a terrific result for him."

The previous New Balance Collegiate meet record was set in 2006 and Tully's previous personal best was 2:25.00. In running the 1000 meters for the first time at an event during the current indoor season, Tully beat Tony Clement of Oklahoma by 0.66 seconds.

Tully's performance comes on the heels of him anchoring the Villanova 4x800 meter relay team to a second place finish last week in the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. So far this season, he had also posted a third-place finish in the mile (Jack Pyrah Invitational) and a fourth-place showing in the 800 meters (Penn State National Open).

The eighth annual New Balance meet was in full swing by Friday afternoon and will continue throughout the evening and the entire day on Saturday. The Wildcat women's team will have an entry in the distance medley relay on Friday night (8:30 p.m. race time) and both teams will have several student-athletes in competition throughout the day on Saturday.
