Ellison and Sheridan Each Win Events at New Balance Collegiate Invitational
Feb. 3, 2012
NEW YORK--Sophomore Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) and senior Ryan Sheridan (Melville, N.Y.) produced wins in the championship sections of the 500 meters and the 5000 meters, respectively, to highlight the Villanova performances on the first day of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational held at the New York Armory on Friday. Both runners established personal best times in their events as well.
Ellison ran his first race of the season in the 500 meters and crossed the finish line with a time of 1:01.92. That was nearly a full second faster than the time he ran at the Armory last season (1:02.76) and he also won by a margin of more than a quarter of a second over the runner-up from George Mason in tonight's race. His winning time met the qualifying mark for both the BIG EAST Championships and the ECAC Championship. Ellison is now qualified for both postseason meets in the 500 meters, the 800 meters and the 1000 meters.
In the 5000 meters Sheridan raced to a personal best time of 13:56.43 and registered a winning margin of nearly eight seconds. He was running his second 5000 meters race of the season and lowered his time by more than 22 seconds from just two weeks ago at the same site. He beat his previous personal best by four seconds and is now within striking distance of running an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships next month.
Junior Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.) also ran in the 5000 meters and wound up in sixth place with a time of 14:29.03. He also rounded into form, cutting his time in the event by more than nine seconds ago from the 2012 Great Dane Classic held at the Armory two weeks ago.
Four athletes competed in the championship section of the 1000 meters for the Wildcats and a pair of runners finished in the top 16 of the event. Redshirt freshmen Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) and Chris Pietrocarlo (Hampstead, N.H.) placed 12th and 15th, respectively. O'Sullivan lowered his time in the 1000 meters this season to 2:28.95 and Pietrocarlo recorded a postseason qualifying time of 2:29.42 to earn a BIG EAST and ECAC berth in the event (he had previously qualified in the Mile). Junior Joseph LoRusso (Oak Hill, Va.) and redshirt freshman Richie Bohny (Holmdel, N.J.) finished 19th (2:30.18) and 24th (2:31.58), respectively.
In the preliminaries of the college section of the 400 meters freshman Bryan Murphy (Teaneck, N.J.) came in 30th with a time of 49.93 and was followed by junior Nicoy Hines (Paterson, N.J.), who won his heat with a time of 50.02 and placed 35th overall. Junior Carlton Bowers (Springfield, N.J.) and freshman Cory Serfoss (Easton, Pa.) had times of 50.66 and 51.70 and each finished as the runner-up in their respective heats.
Freshman Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led Villanova in the field events with a distance of 6.93 meters in the college section of the long jump. He finished sixth in Flight 4 and junior Lazaro Tiant (Roselle, N.J.) came in fourth in Flight 1 with a jump of 6.59 meters.
In the championship section of the shot put senior Frank Anuszewski (Pottstown, Pa.) came in 53rd with a throw of 13.88 meters.
Competition continues in this weekend's New Balance meet on Saturday morning.
